Best National Parks Near Philadelphia, PA

Shenandoah National Park is the closest national park to Philadelphia, at about 210 miles to the southeast in Virginia. A great way to see this park in your RV is by driving the 105-mile Skyline Drive, which spans the entire length of the park from north to south. There are several access points to Skyline Drive in addition to numerous overlooks that provide stunning views of the Piedmont and Shenandoah Valley. The park also features over 500 miles worth of hiking trails as well as fishing, rock climbing, biking, bird-watching, and horseback riding. Shenandoah National Park has several campgrounds offering RV spots but with no electrical hookups.

French Creek State Park is just over 50 miles to the northwest of Philadelphia, in Elverson. The park comprises over 7,500 acres and has two lakes, a trail network of 40 miles, and the Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site with a cold blast furnace from the 1830s. In addition to activities like fishing, hiking, and boating, French Creek also has a disc golf course open year-round. The park also has a permanent, self-guided orienteering course.

In Hanover, about 120 miles west of Philadelphia, is Codorus State Park. The centerpiece of the park is Lake Marburg, on which you can fish for crappie, bluegill, yellow perch, and largemouth bass. You can take a properly registered motorboat out on the lake as well as canoes, kayaks, and sailboats. Other activities include swimming and playing disc golf. Codorus stays open in the winter for ice skating, cross-country skiing, and sledding. The park's main campground has 198 sites, some with electric hookups for RVs.

Over in New Jersey, 40 miles south of Philadelphia near Vineland, is Parvin State Park. This park sits right on the edge of the forested Pine Barrens, and the area has a long history, with the ruins of Native American Lenape encampments here in addition to the park hosting members of the Civilian Conservation Corps, who helped develop Parvin in the 1930s. Go swimming in the summer on Parvin Lake, or take one of the 15 miles' worth of trails for biking, walking, or jogging. Fishing, hunting, birding and wildlife viewing, and picnicking are also possible here.

National Forests Near Philadelphia, PA

The only national forest in Pennsylvania is Allegheny National Forest, and it's quite a ways from Philadelphia, at nearly 300 miles. Located in the northwest part of the state, Allegheny features over 510,000 acres. The completion of the Kinzua Dam here created the Allegheny Reservoir on which you can go boating and paddling. Other summer activities include hiking and mountain biking. In the winter, you can go snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. This national forest also permits geocaching in most areas.

Arguably the top site in the entire city, the Independence National Historical Park in the Old City neighborhood is where you can learn about Philadelphia's role in the country's founding. The two most popular sites are Independence Hall, which you can view on a ranger-led tour, and the Liberty Bell, housed in its own building with views of Independence Hall. While in the Hall, see where both the U.S. Constitution and Declaration of Independence were signed. From March through December, tours of the Hall are by tickets only, which you can buy online. You don't need tickets to see the Liberty Bell up close.

Other notable parts of this national historical park include the National Constitution Center, where you can learn everything you want to know about the U.S. Constitution, the Franklin Court Courtyard, the site of Ben Franklin's former home, and the Declaration House where Thomas Jefferson worked on the Declaration of Independence.

Get a picture of Ben Franklin right by his statue at the Benjamin Franklin National Memorial, located within the Franklin Institute museum at North 20th Street in Center City. Franklin sits about 20 feet high on his pedestal constructed of white marble. After snapping your photo with Ben, take more time to explore the Franklin Institute, which offers fun exhibits that include Your Brain, Space Command, the Train Factory, and the famous Giant Heart, which you can walk through and examine all the different parts that make up this vital organ.

Valley Forge National Historical Park is in the town of Valley Forge, about 25 miles northwest of Philadelphia. This historical park commemorates the time when George Washington and the Continental Army encamped here from December 1777 to June 1778. While visiting, see Washington's Headquarters as well as reconstructed log cabins similar to those that housed the army soldiers. This park also has nearly 30 miles of hiking trails, including a portion of the longer Schuylkill River Trail.

The Campus Park and Ride is on Warfield Street, between Interstate 76 and the Schuylkill River, near the Grays Ferry neighborhood. This site has a dump station, 30- and 50-amp power, full hookups, Wi-Fi and cell reception, and a gated area with security cameras. This pet-friendly facility also offers shuttle buses to various attractions within the city.

Roughly 35 miles north of Philadelphia in Quakertown, the Little Red Barn Campground has full hookups, showers, a pool, pull-through and back-in sites, fire rings, free Wi-Fi, and a game room. The Little Red Barn permits pets on-site.

In Hatfield, just over 30 miles north of Philadelphia, is the Village Scene RV Park. In this pet-friendly campground, you'll have both 30 and 50 amps' worth of power, full hookups, showers, and back-in and pull-through RV spots.

The TA-Petro Stopping Center in Paulsboro, NJ, about 20 miles south of Philadelphia, has fuel services, a grab-and-go deli, a laundry room, a Western Union, and Amazon lockers. The dump station is available to use for a small fee.

Are there any special driving considerations or techniques I should know when operating a motorhome rental in Philadelphia, PA?

Yes, motorhomes are larger and heavier than most passenger vehicles, so it is important to allow for more time and space when turning, merging, or stopping. Additionally, it is recommended to drive slower than the posted speed limit and to use caution when driving in windy or wet conditions.

How do I properly level and stabilize a motorhome at my campsite or RV park?

Motorhomes typically have built-in leveling jacks or blocks that can be adjusted to ensure the RV is level and stable. Some RV parks may also provide leveling pads or blocks if needed. Discuss your campsite with the RV owner ahead of time and they can provide you guidance on stabilizing.

What kind of maintenance or upkeep do I need to perform on the interior and exterior during my rental period?

You should keep the interior clean and tidy, empty waste tanks as needed, and report any damages or malfunctions to the RVshare owner. Exterior maintenance such as checking tire pressure is also recommended.

Does my motorhome rental come with bedding, linens, or other items I would consider to be personal?

This varies by RVshare owner. Some owners may include bedding and linens, while others may require renters to bring their own. It is best to check with the owner prior to renting.

Should I bring entertainment equipment or appliances for the motorhome rental?

While some motorhomes may come equipped with entertainment options or appliances, it is always a good idea to bring your own if desired. However, be mindful of any limitations on power usage or space restrictions. Check the RV listing or ask the RV owner what kind of entertainment is included.

What fuel efficiency considerations do I need to consider when operating a motorhome rental?

Motorhomes are not typically known for their fuel efficiency, but there are steps you can take to improve gas mileage such as driving at a lower speed, avoiding excessive idling, and keeping tires properly inflated.

How do I properly operate and maintain the various systems in a motorhome rental?

The RVshare owner should provide you with detailed instructions and manuals for operating and maintaining the various systems in the motorhome. It is important to follow these instructions carefully to ensure proper use and prevent damage.

Are any unique features or amenities available in motorhome rentals that may not be found in other RVs in Philadelphia, PA?

This varies by RV owner and motorhome class, but some motorhomes may have unique features such as slide-outs, outdoor kitchens, or luxury finishes that may not be found in other types of RVs.
