Waterbury was originally inhabited by Native American tribes. In 1674, a group of settlers from Farmington, Connecticut used a land grant to purchase the land from the tribes. The town was originally called the Village of Mattatuck but was officially changed to Waterbury after its incorporation in 1686. For decades, the town’s population hovered at around 200 residents. By 1725, the population had grown to 350 people. Just fifty years later, in 1775, the town swelled to over 3,500 residents. As the population continued to increase, the infrastructure and economy also began to see rapid growth. Before the start of World War 2, Waterbury was at the top of the brass industry. Today, the city boasts over 107,000 residents.
