Explore Nesquehoning, Pennsylvania in an RVshare RV Rental

Nesquehoning is the oldest mining town in Carbon County. In 1785, anthracite coal was first discovered. It was then carried to Mauch Chunk on the Room Run gravity railroad that was built in 1830. For years, mules brought the empty cars back to the mines until a wood-burning locomotive replaced them. In 1824, the first home was built for Thomas Kelly, and six years later, the first school was built. In 1838, a post office was established with Joseph Minehard in charge. Other buildings began to appear throughout the town, like congregational churches, homes, and a firehouse. The city's growth was primarily due to the coal mining industry in the area.

Italian settlers arrived at Nesquehoning in July 1884 and were all from the same town in Italy — Avigliano in the province of Potenza. The immigrants settled on the hillside south of Nesquehoning and called it Little Italy. During World War I, the demand for anthracite coal became exceptionally high, so the Lehigh Navigation Company moved the miners and families to the town and began to undermine it. The original families abandoned the area, moved to the hillside's other side, and renamed the land New Columbus.

Today, the borough of Nesquehoning consists of four distinctive neighborhoods divided by highways, natural creeks, and the railroad: Nesquehoning Village, New Columbus, Old Hauto, and Lake Hauto. Each community in the Nesquehoning borough has diverse groups of people living in them. The oldest built-up area within the borough is the former Village of Nesquehoning.
