Nearly 60 years ago, neither Beltzville Lake nor its accompanying state park existed. Rather, there was the town of Big Creek Valley, which was vacated so that the United States Corps of Engineers could create Beltzville Lake. Six years later, Beltzville State Park was completed. All that remains of the original town is the church and the covered bridge, the latter of which was moved to the space between the picnic area and the beach. Although it used to carry wheeled traffic of different kinds, it's now only for pedestrians. Today, the park covers a little more than 3,000 acres, and the lake covers a little less than 1,000 acres. The entire area is renowned for its all-season recreational opportunities.

What to Do at
Beltzville State Park
Rev up your outboard motor for some water skiing or pleasure cruising on the lake. Drop a fishing line into the water, and go after some tasty trout that you can take home with you.
Hiking
The hiking at the park is mostly easy in Beltzville State Park. The trails range in length from about 0.5 miles up to about 5 miles, and these trails convert easily to cross-country skiing trails during the winter. In fact, the park is open all year, and the trails are as busy in the winter as they are during the summer. The Preacher's Camp Trail is the hardest of the bunch, as it climbs nearly 500 feet.
Flora and Fauna
Over the last seven years, birdwatchers have spotted 265 different species of birds inside Beltzville State Park, so you can fill nearly a whole birding notebook with your sightings. Deer, black bears, and bobcats are found in the woods of the park. On very rare occasions, you can even encounter a Nittany lion. These predators were removed from Pennsylvania in the 1880s, but one might frequent the old hunting grounds. Mountain laurels are the most famous flower of the Pocono Mountains. Daffodils and phlox appear in Beltzville State Park in the spring and early summer.
Fishing
Beltzville Lake is well-stocked every year with bass, trout, and several varieties of panfish. You can also catch native muskellunge and walleye. Ice fishing during the winter is extremely popular, so bring your portable ice fishing shack if you plan to visit when the ice is thick and safe enough.
Swimming
Lifeguards are on duty from the middle of May until Labor Day every year unless otherwise posted. The beach spans more than 500 feet of shoreline. Interestingly, the water temperature is hottest in September rather than July, and it tops out at roughly 70 F.
Boating
Except for boats with inboard motors, all other kinds of boats are allowed. The speed limit for motorboats is 45 mph. There is also a specific area for water skiing and water tubing, and this area is off-limits for boats that aren't pulling a skier or a tuber. During the winter, when the ice is safe enough, visitors race ice boats across the frozen lake.
How to Get to
Beltzville State Park
Proceed to Allentown. From Allentown, drive north on Route 145. When it crosses with Route 248, take Route 248 north to Weissport. In Weissport, take Route 209 east. When you get to Harrity Road, take that north a short distance, and then turn east on Pohopoco Drive, which continues all the way to Beltzville State Park.
Entering Beltzville State Park
Because it's a day-use park without a campground, it lends itself to you entering on foot or bike. You'd have to park in the town of Weissport and bike from there, though. The park is open from sunrise to sunset every day of the year. There is a large parking lot in Beltzville State Park near the entrance. Also, most of the areas of the park are ADA-accessible.
