Prior to colonization, the Delaware Indians called Doylestown and the entire Bucks County area home. In 1682, the King of England granted these lands to William Penn as a debt payment. Doylestown was established on the 20,000 acres of land William Penn then gave the Free Society of Traders. The remaining parcels of land were sold to other proprietors, including Jeremiah Langhorne and Joseph Kirkbridge.
By 1750, the area had a few settlers. It had a tavern, a store, and a blacksmith. The tavern, owned by William Doyle, was fittingly called Doyle’s Tavern. Seemingly, the name ‘Doylestown’ was coined from his surname. A stagecoach route was constructed along the Philadelphia-Easton Road in 1792, leading to the establishment of Doylestown as a stopover.
In 1814, Doylestown residents petitioned judges to authorize the creation of the Township of Doylestown. Small villages like Furlong and Cross Keys were also incorporated into the newly-formed township.
Today, Doylestown measures 2.16 square miles with over 8,000 people. It also serves as the county seat of Bucks County.
