Once inside the mine, you will have the opportunity to check out a 900-foot deep elevator that was used to haul coal into the surface. Additionally, there are lots of photos on display of the miners. You will also have the opportunity to check out some of the tools used in coal-mining back then. It is a great history lesson for the whole family. The No.9 coalmine was continuously mined from 1855-1972.

Grey Towers National Historic Site

Overlooking the Delaware River, Grey Towers National Historic Site is a house that at one time belonged to Gifford Pinchot, who was the first ever director of the US forest service. Its architectural design is in a French style, which was a deliberate attempt to depict the family`s French origin. The house and its surrounding area cover a total of 102 acres. The area surrounding the house has great hiking and biking trails. Visitors are welcomed to visit this historic site 7 days a week. The Pinchot family donated this house to the US forest service in 1963, and since then the service has continued to manage it. Visitors also get to visit the Pinchot institute, which has numerous collections of his conservation work.
