The Detroit Institute of Arts is a top art museum in the Great Lakes region, and it houses over 100 galleries of American and global works. The Motown Museum is another great attraction that features official Motown artifacts, Motown Records' famed Studio A, and costumes once worn by The Supremes.
Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Ohio's only national park, is located just 186 miles away from the heart of Detroit. This park is known for its scenic hiking trails through forests, hills, ravines, and wetlands. Plus, this park is home to Ohio's tallest waterfall, Brandywine Falls, which is 65 feet in height. Along the drive to the park, you may stop in Toledo to visit top attractions, such as the Toledo Zoo or Imagination Station. Cross-country skiing is usually available in the winter. Highland Recreation Area is a top Michigan park for hiking in old-growth forests. Just 109 miles from Detroit sits Perry's Victory & International Peace Memorial, a site dedicated to the War of 1812. Since the location of the memorial is on the grounds of an important battle of the war, it commemorates the lives of six lost soldiers who are buried there. This site can be found near Put-in-Bay in Ohio. You may want to consider visiting the site when it hosts battle reenactments. Found in Mentor, Ohio, is the James. A Garfield National Historic Site, which commemorates the 20th president of the United States. At this historic site, visitors can tour the president's home and presidential library, which was the first of its kind to be established in the U.S. This site is located about 190 miles from Detroit. You may want to visit the cities of Toledo and Sandusky along the way. The Charles Young Buffalo Soldiers National Monument is also found in Ohio, near Xenia. Located 228 miles from Detroit, this site is dedicated to the life of Charles Young, who was the first African American National Park Superintendent. This man was also a leading figure in the military during the American Civil War and a professor at Wilberforce University. Just outside of the site is the National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center, which highlights the influence of Afro-American music on modern culture.
