Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area

There are over 250 miles of hiking trails at the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. Hiking Trails

  • Mt. Tammany Trail

    While there are many places where the Delaware Water Gap is stunning, one of the best views is from the summit of the Mt. Tammany Trail. This trail gains over 1,200 feet in elevation over its course. You will be hiking under old-growth trees along much of this trail.

  • Blue Mountain Lake

    The Blue Mountain Lake is a relatively flat trail running through ridge-top forests and near the lake. This trail is very easy to follow as it was once a public road. You can often see wildlife from this trail as the Delaware Water Gap is home to 70 mammal species, especially at sunrise or sunset when the animals are coming in to get a drink. Watch under the leaf cover, and you may see some of the 31 reptile species that live in this recreation area.

  • Pioneer Trail

    You may feel like you have stepped back in time when you hike past the old homestead and abandoned farming fields on the Pioneer Trail. This trail is a great place to go splashing in the Vancampens Brook. You can catch glimpses of the river from the mid-point of this trail before you follow it up a ridge.

  • Bushkill Falls

    Hike along the 2-mile trail to see the eight waterfalls, including Bushkill Falls. This waterfall drops over 100 feet. Make sure that you leave plenty of time because it usually takes about two hours to walk along the well-maintained boardwalk.

  • Austin T. Blakeslee Natural Area

    If you want to see waterfalls, plus go fishing and hiking, be sure to put Austin T. Blakeslee Natural Area on your itinerary. This area offers many opportunities to explore an old-growth forest, and dogs are welcome if they are leashed.

  • Dorflinger Glass Museum

    See the elegant glassworks at the Dorflinger Glass Museum. Pay special attention to the V-shaped rounded cuts on many pieces because this is where the cutting wheel to make those cuts was invented. A 600-acre wildlife sanctuary surrounds this museum.

  • The Pocono Indian Museum

    Take the audio tour of The Pocono Indian Museum to learn how the Delaware Native Americans existed on this land for over 1,000 years. Learn how arrowheads were made, and view peace pipes that are over 150 years old. Preserving this history is important as this tribe was almost wiped out in under 100 years.

How To Get To Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area

It is easy to get to this national recreation area’s headquarters from Allentown, Pennsylvania. Follow US 22 East until it junctions with US 209 North. Stay in the left lane so that you can get on Interstate 80 East. Use Exit 309 to get on Hollow Lane, which will become Hollow Lake Road. Finally, turn on River Road.
