Royal Oak is a suburb of Detroit with a population of a little over 59,000. Farmers who came here to plant crops and build homes were some of the early settlers. Orson Starr, who came from upstate New York, was the township’s first manufacturer. He became known for manufacturing cowbells and bricks. The Detroit Brewsology Beer Fest – Billed as "the boozy hybrid of your middle school museum field trip," this festival occurs in late March and has 30 breweries and 100 beers to sample at the Michigan Science Center.

Holly Recreation Area has 8,000 acres of rolling woodlands and open fields available for plenty of outdoor activities. You can enjoy camping, snowmobiling, fishing, mountain biking, metal detecting, and hiking. This state park also has 17 lakes, a handful of creeks, and 30 miles of trails for hikers and mountain bikers that are not much more than 30 minutes from the urban areas between Flint and Pontiac.
