Point Pelee National Park sits at the southernmost tip of the Canadian mainland on the coast of Lake Erie. And even though it’s small (it’s Canada’s second smallest national park at 3,860 acres) there’s so much to see and explore. From the forests to the marshlands to the beaches, you’ll see a wild variety of wildlife and hike through some beautiful country. Point Pelee National Park is also a park of firsts – it was the first Canadian national park established for conservation and was also the first Canadian park to be designated a dark-sky preserve. Weather varies throughout the year with snow and ice in winter, but warm temperatures in the summer. This variety makes the park a fantastic destination any time of the year. Whether you enjoy hiking, cycling, paddling a canoe, or snowshoeing, Point Pelee National Park offers visitors plenty of opportunities to explore the area.

Point Pelee National Park has a fantastic trail system with hiking and walking trail. The park trails are surfaced with crushed gravel and boardwalks which are accessible for wheelchairs, bicycles, and strollers. There are also unpaved footpaths throughout the park for hiking.

Things to do Outside Point Pelee National Park
There’s plenty to do in Point Pelee National Park! Take the shuttle to the tip of the park to enjoy the sunsets, learn about the local plants, and see the views. The shuttle runs between April and October and is wheelchair-accessible. Point Pelee National Park is one of the most important locations for birdwatching in North America. Birdwatchers will love visiting during the spring and fall months as the park sits along the migration path of many bird species. If you’re visiting during these times, be sure to bring your binoculars! You can also take to the water on canoes and kayaks to discover the marshland and Lake Erie. Canoes are available for rent during the summer and early fall at the Marsh Boardwalk or you can bring in your own. The park also offers guided canoe tours during the summer where you can learn about the local history and environment.

Sturgeon Woods Campground. Located outside of Point Pelee National Park, Sturgeon Woods Campground has over 400 campsites for RVs and trailers. Sites provide full hook ups and can accommodate big rigs. Each site includes a fire pit and picnic table. The campground amenities include scheduled activities and docks for boats. Campers Cove. Another private campground located close to Point Pelee National Park is Campers Cove, located on the shores of Lake Erie. The campground is located 3 km east of the town of Wheatley and is minutes away from the national park. There are 324 sites, including 238 seasonal sites and 86 overnight sites. They offer 30-50 amp hookups and back in and pull through sites.
