Middletown was initially known as Mattabesceck, a name given by local Native Americans. In 1650 it was incorporated as a town under this name, but it was changed to Middletown in 1653. During this time, it was a sailing port before it became an industrial center; by 2010, its population was 47,481.
If you’re traveling with kids, consider visiting Kidcity Children’s Museum. The museum has three floors that provide experimental learning about the Camp-Sterns House of 1835. The children will also enjoy exploring the rare hand-built exhibits. Another exciting place to visit is the Division Art Center at Wesleyan University. Heading west of Middletown, CT, you will reach Higby Mountain. This mountain features an 892-foot basalt mountain ride that connects with the Metacomet Ridge. Metacomet Ridge is 100 miles running north to south from Connecticut to Massachusetts. While RVing, drive for 15 minutes from downtown Middletown to reach the southern trailhead leading to the ridge. It has a rare ecosystem created by the alkaline soils of the fault.
