Explore Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, in an RVshare RV Rental

While Gettysburg, Pennsylvania has become synonymous with the famous 1863 battle, the region has had a long history that's worth exploring during your visit. The Penn Family, for whom the state was eventually named, authorized European settlers to claim the land that would become Adams County in 1736. Before European settlement, the territory had once been home to various Native American tribes, but there wouldn’t be a conflict with any of these until the French and Indian War.

In 1761, Samuel Getts established a tavern that would become popular for many of the settlers in the area. His son, James, opted to create a town layout that included more than 200 lots where settlers could live. The town that would spring from these lots was eventually named after its founder, James Gettys.

Of the towns comprising this new county, Gettysburg was named the county seat. Carriage-making was the chief industry of Gettysburg at this time and would remain the chief industry until the Civil War broke out. In total, more than 170,000 soldiers fought in the massive battle on June 30, 1863.

Several key battles occurred here at locations referred to as the Peach Orchard, Valley of Death, Devil's Den, and Wheatfield. Despite the ominous name and the tremendous loss of life that led to a Union victory, the Battle of Gettysburg only lasted three days. Today, this battle is a major part of Gettysburg life, with reenactments occurring daily and tours through the battlefield being a major source of town pride.
