Mahopac is a hamlet in the town of Carmel in New York's Putnam County. Initially, the area that is now Mahopac was inhabited by the Wappinger Native American tribe. However, most of the Wappinger people abandoned the area when the British Crown wouldn't return their land after the French and Indian War. After that, farmers and families began migrating to Mahopac and renting land there. No battles were fought in Mahopac during the Revolutionary War, but it was a critical strategic location due to being a crossroads between Colonial garrisons. After the war, the Mahopac area was resold to farmers and speculators, and it began to grow steadily after Putnam County was officially incorporated in 1812. By the mid-1800s, Mahopac had become a popular summer resort community with several hotels.
Present-day Mahopac is home to around 9,000 people and is most known for being the home of Lake Mahopac. The large reservoir is a trendy destination for all sorts of recreation. During summer, it's an excellent spot for swimming, boating, and fishing, and during winter, it becomes a popular choice for ice skating and ice boating. If you'd rather stay dry in town, you could head to the Mahopac Golf Club to play a few holes in a gorgeous setting. Alternatively, you could have a picnic or hike in one of the nearby parks.
During your visit to Mahopac, you may get the chance to attend a lively event at the famous Villa Barone Hilltop Manor. You might also want to shop at ACME Markets or take the family for a relaxing day at Sycamore Town Park. In addition, Mahopac features several great dining destinations you should sample while you're in the area. Examples are Holy Smoke, Kobu Asian Bistro, and the Lake House Restaurant and Bar.
