Glenwood Springs began as a modest camp named Defiance in 1883. The town founder’s wife convinced the people to rename their settlement after her hometown of Glenwood, Iowa. Glenwood Springs was incorporated in 1885 and became the county seat of Garfield County. In 1897, electric lights were installed in the nearby Fairy Caves, making Glenwood Springs one of America’s first cities to have electric lighting. Many nearby towns and cities relied on mining for industry, but Glenwood Springs became known as a commercial hub due to its railroad station and its location at the confluence of the Colorado and Roaring Fork Rivers. Glenwood Springs is less than an hour from the skiing mecca of Aspen and less than an hour and a half from the popular city of Grand Junction. As its name implies, Glenwood Springs is home to several high-quality hot springs. The most famous of these is the Glenwood Hot Springs Pool, which is the biggest hot springs pool in the world. The entrance to White River National Forest is about an hour and a half southeast of Glenwood Springs. When you see some of this park’s 2.3 million acres, you’ll understand why it’s America’s most visited national forest. Whether you want to spend time at a world-class ski resort or head out on more than 2,500 miles of hiking trails, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to take your motorhome to see some of Colorado’s stunning mountain scenery. Grand Mesa National Forest is two and a half hours southwest of Glenwood Springs. Grand Mesa is the world’s largest flat-top mountain, so it’s home to a variety of great places to hike, bike, and camp. This forest contains 300 alpine lakes, so there are many fabulous locations for fishing. Stargazing, nature watching, and geocaching are also possible here. About two hours and 15 minutes northeast of Glenwood Springs is Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest. This national forest extends all the way into Wyoming, so it has plenty of space for hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing. If you visit in the fall, you’ll get to see some stunning autumn leaves. Fishing, stargazing, and wildlife watching are other typical pastimes you can do here.
Strawberry Days – Glenwood Springs has hosted this tasty tribute to strawberries for more than 125 years. Live music, a parade, arts and crafts vendors, and a food court are all part of this mid-June Colorado celebration that’s the oldest continuously run festival west of the Mississippi River.
Food and Wine Classic in Aspen - Aspen is best known for its spectacular skiing opportunities, but it also holds this food and wine festival in the middle of June. Celebrity chefs, famous winemakers, and food enthusiasts join forces to produce more than 40 cooking demonstrations and wine seminars.
Country Jam Festival - In late June, Grand Junction hosts this fun Country music festival. More than 20 country bands perform on two stages over the course of several days.
Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is about two and a half hours southwest of Glenwood Springs and an hour and 20 minutes southeast of Grand Junction. Some of North America’s oldest rocks are proudly on display at this 12-mile stretch of the Black Canyon and the Gunnison River. The park’s rugged terrain is ideal for rock climbing and hiking and the river is an excellent place to kayak and fish. You can reach the entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park by traveling roughly three hours northeast of Glenwood Springs. More than 350 miles of trails wind through terrain that features peaks, rivers, valleys, and more. If you want to go fishing, you can take advantage of the park’s more than 50 lakes and numerous streams. Other awesome activities you can do here include horseback riding, wilderness camping, and scenic driving.
If you want to see some of Utah’s famous red rocks, you can drive three hours and 15 minutes west of Glenwood Springs or two hours west of Grand Junction to Arches National Park. Selfie opportunities abound at this stunning national park that features more than 2,000 of the red sandstone arches for which this area is known. Canyoneering, rock climbing, hiking, and stargazing are all popular activities at this national park.
About 45 minutes northwest of Glenwood Springs is Rifle Falls State Park. The cascading triple waterfalls are the stars here, but lush vegetation and a variety of wildlife provide additional attractions to see. When you’re not gazing at Rifle Falls, you can go hunting, fishing, trail running, and mountain biking. If you visit in the winter, you’ll be able to go cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. Just 10 minutes southwest of Rifle Falls State Park is lovely Rifle Gap State Park. This park is centered around Rifle Gap Reservoir, which is an excellent place to go swimming. Bring along your toy hauler and go jet skiing, boating, or water skiing. Several trails in the park provide plenty of areas to hike, bike, ski, snowshoe, and more. Directly north of Rifle Gap State Park is Cedar Mountain, which is BLM land known for its quality hunting, hiking, and off-roading. Parking can accommodate a class A or class C motorhome on all but the busiest days. Sylvan Lake State Park is an hour and 10 minutes southeast of Glenwood Springs. As the park’s name implies, serene and peaceful Sylvan Lake is at the heart of this picturesque Rocky Mountain park. Non-motorized crafts are not allowed on this lake. Other types of boats, as well as paddleboards, are welcome, so it's still worthwhile to bring your toy hauler. On land, horseback riding, biking, hiking, and camping are all common activities.
One of Colorado’s top landmarks is the Colorado National Monument, which is just half an hour outside of Grand Junction. This sprawling desert landscape can be experienced in a variety of ways; you can even view it from your car or bike via the 23-mile Rim Rock Drive.
