A beautiful spot to get a real “Rocky Mountain High,” the Eastern Slope Colorado region is full of beautiful outdoor spots. An area comprising the cities of Denver and Colorado Springs plus such natural formations as Pikes Peak, Mount Evans, and Longs Peak, there’s so much to do and lots to see. The scenery is truly breathtaking, and there are lots of RV friendly spots to spend the night. You can easily spend a week or more gallivanting through the sunrise side of the Rockies. Here are some spots to check out in an RV rental Eastern Slope CO!

Popular Tourist Attractions

Garden of the Gods

Located in Colorado Springs, this National Natural Landmark has some of the most fascinating red rock formations in all of North America. To enjoy the terrain, visitors can hike, ride bikes and horses, and even climb some of the rock faces. Visitors can learn more about the area at the park’s Visitor and Nature Center. The park is open 9:00am to 5:00pm in the winter months and 8:00am to 7:00pm in the summer.

Wings Over The Rockies Air & Space Museum

On the grounds of the former Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, the Wings Over The Rockies Air & Space Museum boasts an impressive collection of aircraft and spacecraft. Aviation fans of all ages can marvel at planes like the X-Wing Starfighter and the F-14A Tomcat. Rotating exhibits are a blend of education and excitement, and there are regular demos and events for visitors. For the convenience of guests, the museum is open seven days a week.

Pikes Peak Cog Railway

The fun of classic train travel and the beauty of panoramic Rocky Mountain views converge at the Pikes Peak Cog Railway to the delight of all visitors. It’s the world’s highest cog railway, going up an astonishing 14,115 feet. On the three hour trip covering almost nine miles, riders can see beautiful examples of the region’s vegetation and wildlife, a natural falls, and of course, a great view of Pikes Peak itself. Riders are even given time at the top to get off and explore a bit. The railway is open every day in the summer with limited hours in the winter when you visit in an RV rental Eastern Slope Colorado.

Campgrounds and State/National Parks

Garden of the Gods Campground

Situated just outside the park for which it’s named, the Garden of the Gods Campground has many RV sites with full hookups, plus bunkhouses, cottages, and other on-site accommodations. Amenities include free wifi, a playground, a heated pool, a game room, and much more. And of course, you’re right in the middle of the majesty of the Rockies. It’s a lovely place to spend the night or an entire day.

Lone Duck Campground

Located just outside of Colorado Springs in Cascade, this May-through-September campground has full hookup RV slots plus cabins. There’s a fishing pond on site, a swimming pool and splash pad, and restrooms and showers. With proximity to Pikes Peak and a host of other Eastern Slope attractions, Lone Duck is ideally situated for a fun Rocky Mountain getaway.

Lathrop State Park

More than a mere campsite, this Walsenburg Park is a true outdoor paradise. Located near the Spanish Peaks, Lathrop State Park offers boating, fishing, swimming, biking, hiking, birdwatching, and more. There’s even a new archery range. RV sites with electric hookups are available; there’s no water or sewer service. Tent camping is also popular at the park.

Events

Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo

An annual tradition in Colorado Springs since 1937, the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo is a classic Colorado good time. After an opening parade, the rodeo kicks off with a full program of riding and roping competitions. The event is held in July, so if you’re planning your getaway in the summer, this is a great down-home event that gives you a taste of local flavor.

Colorado Balloon Classic

Colorado’s largest air show is held on Labor Day weekend in Colorado Springs. It features balloon launches, educational activities, and loads of family friendly fun. Of course, the real draw is the aesthetics: the beautiful, colorful balloons rising in the sky against the backdrop of the Rockies.

The Rocky Mountains cover a vast expanse of the nation’s midsection, and there are many different ways to experience their splendor. For many RVers, though, a visit to the Eastern Slope area of Colorado affords the best combination of activity, accommodations, and peak gazing. If you’re looking for the heart of America’s beauty, look no further.
