Baker City is a small city in Oregon's Baker County, and is also the county seat. The community was originally platted in 1865, and its growth was gradual. The first post office was established in 1866, and Baker City was officially incorporated in 1874. The city and county were named in honor of U.S. Senator Edward D. Baker, who was the only sitting senator in history to be killed in a military conflict. He died in 1861 while leading a Union Army charge during the Civil War. Baker City began to grow slightly more after the Oregon Short Line Railroad arrived in the area in 1884. The city's name was changed to "Baker" in 1911, but residents voted to restore it to its original name in 1989.

Although Baker City is still a relatively small town, it's one of the larger communities in its remote region of eastern Oregon. Today, the population is roughly 10,000. The peaceful city is home to several landmarks worth visiting, such as the Geiser Grand Hotel, the Chinese Cemetery, and the Sumpter Valley Railroad. There's also the Historic Eltrym Theater, which dates back to 1940 and is a great place to watch a movie. Another is the Leo Adler House Museum, the historic home of philanthropist and magazine magnate Leo Adler.
