Nearby National Parks

Lassen Volcanic National Park  

In order to see the wonders of Lassen Volcanic National Park, all you have to do is travel three hours northeast of Sacramento. As the park’s name implies, there are plenty of volcanic features to be found here, including geysers, fumaroles, mud pots, and more. You can soak in a hydrothermal spring or even get a massage at the park’s resort. If you want to hike, ride, swim, or fish, you can do so at Lassen Volcanic National Park. 

Yosemite National Park  

If you travel two hours and 45 minutes southeast of Sacramento, you can visit the famous Yosemite National Park on your road trip from Sacramento to Ogden. Half Dome, Yosemite Falls, ancient sequoias, and more await you at this national park that attracts millions of visitors annually. Numerous trails take you through Yosemite Valley, Wawona Grove, Mariposa Meadow, and more. Great Basin National Park  

Just before you cross the border between Nevada and Utah, you should drive a little under three hours from West Wendover, Nevada, to explore Great Basin National Park. This park has so many different features that there truly is something for everyone here. Do you want to explore an ancient bristlecone pine forest? Great Basin has one. Would you like to tour some caves? You can do that as well. The park is home to the Northern Hemisphere’s southernmost glacier, so that’s another environment that you can explore. You can also summit a mountain of more than 13,000 feet, stargaze at this International Dark Sky Park, and hike on established trails and in off-trail areas. 

Capitol Reef National Park  

If you want to end your Sacramento to Ogden RV road trip quickly, you can head straight north from Salt Lake City. Should you decide that you want to visit some awesome national parks, however, you should travel three and a half hours south of Salt Lake City to Capitol Reef National Park. This park is the first in a stretch of fantastic national parks along Interstate 70 that feature red rocks and stunning desert formations. Capitol Reef National Park is full of canyons, domes, pillars, bridges, cliffs, and many unique rock formations. More than 2,700 fruit-bearing trees also call this park home, so you might be able to pick up some fresh produce in season. 

Canyonlands National Park  

Canyonlands National Park is four hours from Salt Lake City, but it’s only a little over two hours from Capitol Reef National Park. As its name implies, this is an outstanding park to visit if you want to explore over 500 square miles of rugged desert canyons, crevasses, mesas, and more. Awe-inspiring desert vistas, Native American rock art, the intersection of the Colorado and Green Rivers, and more await. The entrance to Arches National Park is only half an hour away, so if you want to see thousands of delicate sandstone arches placed in the midst of stunning red-rock desert vistas, then you can easily stop by Arches for a visit.

Folsom Lake State Recreation Area  

Folsom Lake State Recreation Area is only 15 minutes east of Roseville, California, so it’s an early stop on your road trip from Sacramento to Ogden. Between Folsom Lake and Natoma Lake, there are plenty of excellent venues for fishing, swimming, boating, and water sports. If you’re into biking, you may want to check out the 32-mile bike path in the park. Hiking, horseback riding, and running are also popular here.

Donner Memorial State Park  

Five minutes from Truckee, California, you’ll find Donner Memorial State Park. The park is located at the site of the Donner Party’s camp in 1846; you can see some artifacts related to that tragedy in the museum on the premises. Donner Lake is a great place to go fishing, kayaking, paddle boarding, swimming, and more. You can also explore some of the Sierra Nevada Mountains on foot. 

Ed Z’berg Sugar Pine Point State Park  

You can’t take a Sacramento to Ogden RV road trip without spending some time at Lake Tahoe, so you should visit Ed Z’berg Sugar Pine Point State Park. It’s only half an hour south of Truckee, so it’s easy to reach. More than 20 miles of marked trails are perfect for hiking and cross-country skiing. Of course, you can spend plenty of time on Lake Tahoe swimming, sunbathing, boating, fishing, and more. 

Great Salt Lake State Park  

The Great Salt Lake is a must-add to your road trip itinerary from Sacramento to Ogden, so visiting Great Salt Lake State Park is a logical choice since it’s right off your route and only 20 minutes from Salt Lake City. This is a quality place to go boating, canoeing, or sailing on the Great Salt Lake; you can even rent a boat here. Other fun activities include touring the visitor center, stopping by the gift shop, and walking along the shoreline. 

Antelope Island State Park

The National Auto Museum  

The National Auto Museum is only five minutes from your route in downtown Reno. More than 200 cars from multiple eras are displayed here in authentic street scenes. At this museum, you can tour the exhibits on foot, watch a theatrical presentation, and even pose for pictures in period dress in one of the available photo-opportunity cars.

Black Rock Desert-High Rock Canyon NCA  

The outskirts of Black Rock Desert-High Rock Canyon NCA are an hour and a half away from Wadsworth, Nevada, but the extra driving is worthwhile given the nature of the park. More than 800,000 acres contain over 100 miles of emigrant trails, historic wagon trails, and hot springs. You can also explore the Black Rock Desert playa and High Rock Canyon.

Lamoille Canyon Scenic Byway  

Fifty minutes from Elko, Nevada, you’ll find gorgeous Lamoille Canyon Scenic Byway. You can explore parts of this stretch of the Ruby Mountains on foot or from the comfort of your vehicle. Wildflowers, waterfalls, a glacier-carved canyon, and more await you.
