Folsom Lake State Recreation Area

offers plenty of different outdoor activities to enjoy. You can hike easy or more strenuous trails, picnic for the day, or stay overnight at one of the campgrounds. The park has two lakes: Folsom Lake and Natoma Lake. Fishing, swimming, and boating are always fun, and just sitting around the lake and relaxing is a good way to spend a camping trip. The park is located conveniently between Sacramento to the west and Lake Tahoe to the east.

Inside Folsom Lake State Recreation Area

Folsom Lake State Recreation Area is a state park at the base of the Sierra Nevada foothills. Here, you can enjoy fishing, hiking, biking, running, horseback riding, and various boating activities. The lake has trout, big and smallmouth bass, catfish and perch. There is a 32-mile bicycle path that runs between Folsom Lake and several county parks before terminating in Old Sacramento. Lake Natoma, also located in the park, is popular for crew races and sailing. 

Outside Folsom Lake State Recreation Area

Besides enjoying all that this state park has to offer, you can visit nearby Sacramento or even take a jaunt out to Lake Tahoe. When you are in the mood for dining out, shopping, or visiting different attractions, you will have no shortage of options.

Sightseeing

California State Railroad Museum

This museum is a tribute to the history of the railroad in California. There are 21 restored locomotives and cars, some of which date back to 1862. There is a full-scale diorama of an 1860's construction site and a bridge that is elevated 24 feet above the museum floor. You can ride on an excursion locomotive that pulls vintage passenger coaches and converted freight cars from April through September on a 45-minute trip along the levees of the Sacramento River.

Old Governor's Mansion

This former governor's mansion was built in 1877. It was purchased by the state of California in 1903 to house the state's governors. During the next 64 years, it was home to 13 governors, including Earl Warren and Ronald Reagan. The mansion is largely unchanged from when the Reagans vacated in 1967. You can view Governor Pardee's 1902 Steinway piano, the velvet sofa and chairs added in 1911 and hand-tied Persian carpets acquired in 1943. There are marble fireplaces from Italy and gold-framed mirrors from France.

The Sacramento Zoo began as a small park zoo with only 40 animals, but today it is a large animal conservatory with 400 animals from all over the world. This zoo is definitely worth a visit with the family.

How to Get to
Folsom Lake State Recreation Area

From the east, you will take Interstate 80 and get off the Douglas Boulevard exit in Roseville. Travel east and turn right on Auburn-Folsom Road. Exit on Beals Point and take a left. From the south, travel on Highway 50 north and take the Folsom Blvd exit onto Folsom-Auburn Road. Exit off Beals Point and take a right.

Entering Folsom Lake State Recreation Area

The park has various areas that have different fees and different opening hours, so check the park's website for the days you plan to attend. Most areas are open from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 or 10:00 p.m. during summer. There is a $10 fee for the boat launch.
