Lunar Crater

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is responsible for 1 in every 10 acres of land in the U.S.

Lunar Crater is an extraordinary volcanic site in Nevada's Great Basin Desert. This significant natural landmark in Nevada is known for its prominent lava flows and fissures. The crater is almost 500 feet deep and thousands of feet wide and is believed to have formed 15,000 years ago. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), a federally operated agency, protects this public land and enables visitors to hike and explore the area. The scenic Lunar Crater loop offers some camping space along the road, and there is an abundance of campgrounds in the nearby area.

Tonopah is 84 miles west of Lunar Crater. Begin your journey in this town to stock up before your adventure. This landmark sits between huge swaths of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. Great Basin National Park is 171 miles east and Death Valley National Park is 217 miles west of Lunar Crater.
