Burlington began as a small town on the banks of the Delaware River in 1763. That year, three Loyalists, George Carteret, Charles Calvert, and James Knowles, purchased land on the east side of the river from the Lenape Native Americans. They named their new settlement Burlington after Lord Burlington, an English nobleman who had helped them gain their freedom. The early settlers were farmers and millers who prospered thanks to the rich natural resources. The town grew rapidly and by 1800 had a population of 1,500 people. It became known as "the commercial capital of New Jersey" because of its strong industrial base. Burlington was also home to several important political figures, including John Jay, the first Chief Justice of the United States, and Aaron Burr, the third U.S. Vice President.

In 1837, Burlington became part of New Jersey when that state was created from portions of New York and Pennsylvania. One of the most notable events in Burlington County history occurred on July 3, 1776, when General George Washington and his Continental Army crossed the Delaware River into Pennsylvania after their successful campaign against the British. After spending the night in Burlington, Washington addressed troops from a hill overlooking the town.

Today, Burlington is a thriving community with a rich history and a population of over 25,000. It is home to many historic sites, including Fort Mercer and Old Whitehall Village, both listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is home to two prominent universities, Rutgers University and the University of Vermont, as well as numerous businesses and organizations.

With its rich history, beautiful architecture, and urban parks, Burlington is a great place for anyone looking for a relaxing weekend away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The downtown area features many shops and restaurants, while the surrounding areas offer plenty of outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, and fishing. Whether you're planning to stay for a day or spend several days in Burlington, there is something for everyone to enjoy!
