Explore Sterling Heights, Michigan in an RVshare RV Rental

Sterling Heights, Michigan sits along the banks of the Clinton River in Macomb County, once known as the Huron River. Natawaippee was the river's original Native American name. In 1824, locals renamed the waterways in honor of New York's governor, Dewitt Clinton. Pioneers hunted the abundant wild game in the lush forest and easily caught fish in the nearby waters. The settlement of the city began after the Revolutionary War. Farmers came and built large homesteads because of the area's ability to grow crops.

By 1880, Sterling Township had become well-known for its farms, wheat fields, and corn. Today, Sterling Heights is home to thousands of commercial and industrial businesses and is a key part of the Detroit metropolitan area. Yet, back in 1900, it took a half-day on horseback to travel the rough clay Van Dyke Road from Sterling Township to Detroit. Settlers long ago relied on the area for their livelihood and the Clinton River to transport their goods to market.

Sterling Heights is home to Upton House Museum, a historic home built in 1867 that is currently on the National Register of Historic Places. Spend the afternoon exploring this Victorian Italianate style of architecture which was popular from 1840 to 1880. The Upton farm of 136 acres is the current site for the Community Center, City Hall, Stevenson High School, and the Justice and Library buildings. Tours are welcome. Explore inside the Nature Center for two to three hours and take a close look at the exhibits and many living amphibians and reptiles. Visitors also observe the 900-gallon aquarium filled with fish generally found in local rivers and lakes.
