Racine, home to over 77,000 people, is the county seat of Racine County and is known for being the fifth-largest city in Wisconsin. Before it ever became a town though, it was home to Native Americans, such as the Miami and Potawatomi peoples and, before that, the ancient Hopewell and Woodland peoples. The first Europeans known to enter the area were a French priest and his assistants who camped along the nearby Root River in 1674. In 1791, this same area was turned into a trading post. In 1848, the city of Racine was founded and, in 1852, the city’s first college was established. Today, this college has since closed, but the buildings on its campus are preserved for community and religious meetings. Located a little under 140 miles from Racine is Indiana Dunes National Park, the perfect destination for swimming, boating, and fishing. A little over 350 miles north of Racine is Isle Royale National Park, the only national park in Michigan. This park is located completely on an island in Lake Superior, and the island can only be accessed by boat or plane. Once on the island, visitors may view the wildlife or historical lighthouses around the island, but no cars or vehicles with wheels are allowed on the island to keep the land as preserved as possible. This is one of the least frequently visited national parks on the register, but it is also one of the most rewarding to visit. Gateway Arch National Park is found in St. Louis, Missouri and is where visitors can tour the famous Gateway Arch that overlooks the Mississippi River. You can also tour many museums on American westward expansion at this national park or see some historical places, like the Old St. Louis Courthouse, where the famous Dred Scott case of the 1800s was judged.

Pets are allowed on most sections of the trail, and sections vary in intensity from easy, like the Devil’s Staircase section, to difficult and moderate, like the Lodi Marsh Segment. Pullman National Monument is the site of an abandoned settlement that was located outside of Chicago. This settlement, which was founded in the late 1800s, was made to provide quality housing for factory workers. Today, visitors can tour these houses and the sites where the famous Pullman Strike was organized. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is open during all hours all year round, and it can be found along the shore of Lake Michigan near Maple City, Michigan. The sand dunes at this lakeshore rise up to 450 feet, so climbing and hiking the dunes is a must. Other popular activities at this monument include paddling the nearby river and exploring over 100 miles of trails around Lake Michigan.
