Joseph, which is located in Wallowa County north of Wallowa Lake, has a population of just over 1,000 people. The town, which was first mapped in 1883, was named after Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce. People originally came to Joseph to farm and raise cattle. Timber became a big part of the economy after 1908 when the railroad was completed. In the 1980s, however, the timber industry slowed. The town’s economy shifted again when three bronze foundries were opened, and the area is now well-known for its bronze work.

Notable people from Joseph include actor Walter Brennan and champion tennis player Margaret Osborne DuPont. Portland folk band Joseph is also named after the town.
