Thornton State Beach is a protected beach in the state park system of California, USA, but is officially closed to the public. It is located on the Pacific coast of Daly City in the San Francisco Bay Area. The park was closed due to damage and continued danger from landslides, though locals still access the site for hiking, horseback riding, and beach activities. The 58-acre park was established in 1955. The Mediterranean climate tends toward cold and wind, with fog common in summer. The beach was named for the first white settler of the area, one Robert S. Thornton of Rhode Island, a blacksmith who had arrived in the San Francisco area in 1851.
Mussel Rock is a rock formation on the coast of San Mateo County, California, offshore from Daly City. It consists of one large and numerous smaller rocks of a type known as a stack, where a headland is eroded unevenly, leaving small islands. It is best known for being the closest point to the epicenter of the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake, and where the San Andreas Fault enters the San Francisco Peninsula from the northwest. An additional minor fault, the Mussel Rock Fault, was identified in 2000. The area above Mussel Rock consists of steep cliffs with frequent landslides, threatening homes in a subdivision above. The adjacent area is a city park.
San Bruno Mountain State Park is a state park located in northern San Mateo County, California. It is adjacent to the southern boundary of San Francisco and borders the cities of Brisbane, South San Francisco, Colma and Daly City. San Bruno Mountain Park is a landmark of local and regional significance, standing as a unique open-space island in the midst of the peninsula's urbanization at the northern end of the Santa Cruz Mountain Range. The park is dominated by San Bruno Mountain, which is a 4-mile ridge. The park provides habitat for several species of rare and endangered plants and butterflies, including the Mission blue butterfly. Trails to the summit afford outstanding views of San Francisco and the Bay Area.
This park is conveniently located just north of San Francisco a great place for both overnight and extended stays. The location just off Highway 101 makes for easy access into and out of the park. The facilities are clean and well maintained. There are sites with space for larger rigs, RV and tow vehicles. Sites are available with full hookups and 30 or 50-amp service. Showers for men and women are clean and secure and there is a laundry room. Wireless Internet service is included and Cable TV subscription is available from Comcast. There are a number of activities around the park: Hiking trails, a path to the Old Town of Larkspur, the Wildlife Preserve Lagoon. It is nearby to the San Francisco Ferry, where in the city, the many tourist attractions can be explored. The wine country is just a short drive away. However, the best feature of the park has to be the friendly service they provide to all their guests.
