San Rafael Bridge Campground

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is responsible for 1 in every 10 acres of land in the U.S.

Across the country, the Bureau of Land Management has responsibility for more than 256 million acres of public lands. They are charged with preserving these natural places and resources for future generations while making them available for RVers and other outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy today. The agency manages 22.8 million acres of canyonlands, mountain ranges, and forests in Utah. San Rafael Bridge Campground provides easy access to the San Rafael River, a 90-mile-long tributary feeding into the Green River. This river is popular for kayaking, canoeing, and rafting. On land, RVers can hike, bike, or ride on nearby off-highway vehicle (OHV) trails. Across from the campground is the San Rafael Swinging Bridge, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1937. It is closed to vehicle traffic, but pedestrians can check out its unique engineering and experience spectacular views of the canyon below. For one of the best-kept secrets in Utah, check out the nearby Buckhorn Wash to see ancient cliff-face petroglyphs. If you are traveling to Arches National Park, it is about 100 miles to the southeast.

Fishing and BoatingFishing and Boating

The San Rafael River runs from Price to Green River in Utah. You don't need permits, and motorboats aren't allowed. You can put in at Fuller Bottom and then get out at Buckhorn Draw. Floating here includes gentle rapids, and the water is generally slow-moving, so it's great for paddlers of all ability levels. Plan your fishing or boating trip from late April through early June as the water level is relatively low the rest of the year.

ClimbingClimbing

The San Rafael Swell has many dirt roads that lead to numerous climbing options. Check out Buckhorn Wash for various bouldering and cliff face choices as well as crack climbing at Wingate. The San Rafael Reef, also known as the Sandstone Alps, features long slab routes.

Wildlife ViewingWildlife Viewing

Around San Rafael Bridge Campground, you may see bighorn sheep, pronghorn antelope, and mule deer. Birders can look out for peregrine falcons, owls, and sparrows. Along the river, you may spot reptiles and frogs.

Picnicking

San Rafael Bridge Campground is great for a picnic if you want to visit the Swinging Bridge. There are multiple picnic tables for a quick lunch before you continue your adventure through the area. The Little Grand Cayon Overlook does not have picnic tables, but if you bring a blanket, you can enjoy a meal while gazing at canyonlands fading into the distance. Planning your San Rafael Bridge Campground BLM trip

Spring and fall are great times to visit this area. However, in the summer, temperatures often exceed 100 degrees, and in the winter, it is frigid. San Rafael Bridge Campground is an isolated desert environment, so come prepared with plenty of water. You should also bring light clothing, a hat, and sunscreen for the daytime. Include warmer layers in your packing list for stargazing or hanging out at camp in the evenings because it can get chilly after the sun sets. Most of the roads to the main attractions within the area are well-graded dirt routes that can be traveled by most vehicles in dry conditions. Before you begin your venture, ensure you have a full tank of gas and a spare tire. BLM camping offers an opportunity to set up a low-cost base camp to explore the unique geography of this region of Utah and the San Rafael River. However, these campgrounds have few amenities, and it can take careful planning to ensure you and your family have a comfortable experience. Before you head out on your trip, check out our blog for all you need to know about BLM camping.
