Hiking and Biking
Pacific Crest Trail
The Pacific Crest Trail runs through Sand to Snow National Monument. The portion of the trail within the monument offers stunning views of the desert and mountain landscapes, and it is a popular spot for through-hikers and day hikers.

Mission Creek Preserve Trail
This trail follows a riparian corridor along Mission Creek, offering a peaceful hike through lush vegetation and near waterways. The trail features several creek crossings and stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

Lost Palms Oasis Trail
This trail leads hikers through a beautiful desert canyon to a hidden oasis filled with palm trees. It features several switchbacks and steep climbs, but the reward is worth the effort.

Fishing and Boating
Unfortunately, there are no fishing or boating opportunities within the Sand to Snow National Monument BLM site. However, several nearby lakes and rivers offer excellent fishing and boating opportunities. The nearby Big Bear Lake is a popular destination for boating and fishing. Boat rentals are available, and you can fish the waters for various species, including rainbow trout and bass. Lake Arrowhead has a marina that offers boat rentals and guided fishing trips.
Climbing
One popular climbing spot is Holcomb Valley Pinnacles, located about 25 miles north of the monument. The area has options for sport climbing, traditional climbing, and bouldering. Also, the Castle Rock area offers a range of climbing options, including bolted sports routes and traditional crack climbs. The monument also offers several climbing opportunities, including the rock formations near the South Fork Santa Ana River. These formations provide a range of routes for all skill levels, with stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
Wildlife Viewing
One popular wildlife viewing spot is the Whitewater Preserve. This area offers several trails and boardwalks that wind through the wetlands and riparian areas. You can see a variety of bird species, like the endangered southwestern willow flycatcher, the American dipper, and the yellow warbler. The preserve is also home to several mammal species, such as coyotes, mule deer, and black bears.
Another great wildlife viewing spot is the San Gorgonio Wilderness, located just east of the monument. This area is home to various wildlife, including bighorn sheep, black bears, mountain lions, and gray foxes. Visitors can hike along the many trails in the wilderness area to catch glimpses of these animals in their natural habitat.
Picnicking
Several designated picnic areas at Sand to Snow National Monument offer visitors a chance to relax and enjoy a meal surrounded by stunning views. The Whitewater Preserve has several picnic tables and grills available for use. It also has a covered pavilion that can be reserved for group events. The picnic area is located near the pond and wetlands, providing a peaceful and picturesque setting for a meal.
