Walled Lake is a small city located in Oakland County, Michigan. The city was originally called Shelbyville and was founded in 1825 by Walter Hewitt. The city's name was changed to Walled Lake in 1892, possibly because of a stone wall on the banks of a local lake.
The Ohio & Erie Canal connected the Great Lakes with the Ohio River and facilitated trade between the United States and Canada. As a result of the canal, Walled Lake became a prosperous town and continued to grow throughout the nineteenth century.
The city's fortunes changed during the early twentieth century when automobile production began to take off. This caused a decline in ship traffic on the canal, which led to a financial crisis for Walled Lake. To try and save the city, officials decided to build a wall around much of downtown to protect businesses from vandalism and theft. The wall was completed in 1924 and has since become an iconic symbol of Walled Lake. Walled Lake is currently home to over 7,250 people and continues to be one of Oakland County's most important cities.
