Present-day Broken Bow was home to the Choctaw people before the arrival of settlers and colonists. However, it was named Broken Bow after the home city of two Dierks brothers who migrated from Nebraska to Oklahoma to start the Choctaw Lumber Company. The area that became Broken Bow was located towards the eastern terminus of the Texas-Oklahoma railroad.
Newtown was already a developed community accommodating people working in the lumber company. The land south of the railroad was designated for various parts of the Choctaw Lumber Company and employee housing. The land on the northern side was reserved for churches, schools, and businesses. The company constructed a medical facility for its employees and the public.
In 1911, Broken Bow was incorporated into a town. It also received its first post office in the same year. By 1923, Broken Bow had two elementary schools, a high school, five churches, and 32 businesses. It also had a public water and sewage company, and its population exceeded 1,500 people. The timber industry remained a significant source of economic growth in the city as other industries also emerged.
Today, Broken Bow is approximately 6.16 square miles and has more than 4,000 people. While in the city, you will want to visit Beavers Bend Resort Park and Hochatown Petting Zoo. Broken Bow Lake is ideal for swimming, fishing, and other water activities. The city’s central business district is an excellent place with fancy retail stores. You will also want to see the area’s restaurants, bars, and entertainment centers.
