Metter, Georgia was incorporated in 1903. At this time, it was a small community in western Bulloch County. In 1906, Dr. Wallace Kennedy started a movement to create a new county and make Metter the county seat. Eugenia Candler, the wife of former governor Allen Candler, helped him, as did a group of citizens who had a dream to establish Metter as a leading community in southeast Georgia.
In 1914, Candler County was formed from parts of Bulloch, Emanuel, and Tattnall counties. Metter has had a slow but steady growth over the years. It has also gained a reputation as one of Georgia's friendliest and most hospitable communities. Its location on I-16 makes it a gateway to Savannah, Georgia; Jacksonville, FL; and Hilton Head, SC. Metter serves as a convenient rest stop for travelers along the highway.
The growth of Metter was orderly and planned. In 1988, the area from Hiawatha to Vertia Streets and College to Lewis Streets was added to the National Register of Historic Places. The current Candler County courthouse, built in 1921, was placed in the National Register in 2002. The Old Metter High School, built in 1910, is now operated by Candler County Historical Society as a museum and community center. In the early 1990s, the century-old downtown Metter railroad was restored. It serves as a focus for family gatherings and community activities. Metter's entire downtown central business area has been recently added to the National Register of Historic Places, making it one of the most prestigious locations in Metter.
