- Reconstruction Era National Historical Park
At the end of the Civil War, America was left with the challenge of integrating thousands of former slaves into society as free people. Many of these challenges were first explored in Beaufort because it was the first place in the United States that emancipated slaves and allowed them to vote and buy property, as well as create churches, schools, and businesses. Explore this issue with a visit to the Reconstruction Era National Historical Park in Beaufort, South Carolina. Congress solved part of the issue by quickly passing the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments to the Constitution and setting up guidelines to readmit states that were part of the Confederacy to the United States. Many people grappled with what equal and free meant during the Reconstruction Era, which lasted from 1861 to 1900.
