West Springfield, Massachusetts is located in Hampden County with a population of 28,835. It is called “The West Side” because of its location along the Connecticut River. It was first settled in 1635 during a hurricane when people fled to higher ground. After making their way to this spot across the river, they discovered good farmland, and many decided to stay. Early settlers mostly relied on trade, and the local gristmills and sawmills also provided economic opportunities.
The new settlement had a hard time breaking ties with the original settlement across the river. Settlers were required to attend the congregational church and town meetings weekly. This meant they either found a way to cross the river or faced fines. After a family died crossing the river, West Springfield citizens demanded their own church and meeting house. It wasn't until May of 1697 that the Massachusetts General Court approved a separate church and meeting house for the 200 residents. While they continued to fight for their independence, it wasn't until 1774 that they were able to incorporate as a separate town.
