Prior to March of 1950, the town of Truth or Consequences was officially known as Hot Springs, and for a good reason. Beneath the 28-square-mile footprint of this desert flat is a heated aquifer that bubbles to the surface. Then, in 1950, a popular radio game show known as Truth or Consequences crafted a 10-year anniversary publicity stunt in which they found a town to change its name to the name of the game show. Hot Springs agreed, and for their reward, the town was graced with yearly visits from the popular host, Ralph Edwards. These visits lasted five decades.
Now, the town is a draw for visitors looking to enjoy the natural hot springs while experiencing the quaint, desert charm, and interesting attractions. Fortunately, there is no shortage of places to take a dip. There are bathhouses in the town ready for soakers. Additionally, the Rio Grande runs the boundaries of the town and is spectacular to take in, and to the north, you will find Elephant Butte Lake, where water sports and activities await you.
Truth or Consequences offers that small-town ambiance, with cafes and small boutique shops and establishments to welcome you. However, if you're looking for something a little more 21st century, they've also got you covered. Spaceport America, the country's first purpose-built commercial spaceport, is in town. Spaceport is in deep partnership with Richard Branson and is generally not open to the public. However, private tours are available of the facility, which includes a 12,000-by-200-foot-wide runway.
