The first inhabitants of Santa Monica were the Tongva people who called the area Kecheek. Spanish explorer Gaspar de Portolà and his party were the first non-indigenous people to arrive in 1769. Two theories exist about the naming of the town. Some say it was called Santa Monica in honor of the feast day of Saint Monica, the mother of Saint Augustine. Another theory purports that Juan Crespí, a Franciscan missionary, named the town after a pair of springs, Kuruvungna Springs, that called to mind the tears of Saint Monica over her son's impiety.

Two entrepreneurs, Colonel Robert S. Baker of Rhode Island and Senator John P. Jones of Nevada, launched the city of Santa Monica. Even though they built a wharf and a railroad, their original plans for Santa Monica to be a port city failed. The city's environmental and scenic attributes turned it more into a beach resort town and a beautiful place to live. The city of Santa Monica was incorporated in 1886. In 1896, electric trolleys were introduced that connected Santa Monica to Los Angeles, which led to incredible growth.
