Stroll 3.7 miles of sand, play a game of beach volleyball, and end the day with a campfire as the sun sinks under the horizon. With downtown Los Angeles just 20 miles east of the beach and Santa Monica sitting 9 miles north, you’ll never want for entertainment. Dockweiler State Beach also has a unique claim to fame as one of the best plane-spotting beaches in the United States. With beautiful weather every month of the year, it’s always a great time to visit and watch planes from LAX fly low as they take off over the water.

Dockweiler RV Park
If you’re looking forward to some serious beach time, Dockweiler RV Park is the best choice. This park sits near the southern end of the beach, just a short walk from the main Imperial parking lot. Each of the 118 RV spots offers full hookups, a picnic table, and a grill—and more importantly, they’re all just steps from the sand. If you can, book a spot on the western edge of the park so you can watch the sunset from your RV windows and wake up to views of sparkling seas. Nearby, you’ll find everything you need for a comfortable trip, including hot showers and a laundromat. It’s important to note that because of the proximity of the airport, you can expect plenty of noise at all hours, so this might not be the best option for light sleepers. Sites start at $65 per night and rise as high as $75.
Malibu Creek State Park Campground
One of the closest campgrounds to Dockweiler State Beach is at Malibu Creek State Park, about 40 minutes away. This is a great spot to get away from it all—sites are located among rolling green hills, offering peace, quiet, and spectacular views. In fact, the TV show "M*A*S*H" was filmed here in the 1970s. Each of the 63 sites offers access to the restrooms, hot showers, and dump station. You won’t find hookups here, but the excellent hiking opportunities more than make up for the distance. Sites start at $45 per night.

The sand and the sea are the highlights of Dockweiler State Beach; it’s easy to spend a week soaking up the sun and cooling off with a swim. You can join a game at the park’s volleyball courts, and be sure to catch at least one takeoff from nearby LAX. If you’re an angler, rent a surf fishing rig and try your luck casting from the sand. Within the park, there's a long and well-maintained path that's perfect for biking, jogging, and walking. For kids, the Dockweiler Youth Center offers a wide range of family-friendly activities.
How to Get to
Dockweiler State Beach
Dockweiler State Beach is located on the west side of the Los Angeles metro area. To get there, you’ll need to take Vista Del Mar or South Marine Avenue. In an RV, the most convenient route is to take Interstate 105 west until it turns into Imperial Highway. Drive until you hit Vista Del Mar, and you’ll find the large Dockweiler State Beach parking lot.

The parking lot at Dockweiler State Beach is open from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. every day. The park operates a unique system that offers a lower parking fee for the first 300 vehicles that enter the park, so you can save money by getting there early in the day. Keep in mind that rates also vary by season and whether you’re visiting during the week or weekend.
