Best National Parks Near Newport News, VA

Virginia only has one national park, Shenandoah National Park. This is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains, extending from Front Royal in the north to Waynesboro on the southern end. The park is home to over 500 miles of trails with five different cultivated campgrounds. Aside from enjoying the beauty of Skyline Drive, you’ll also want to build in time to visit Dark Hollow Falls, Rose River Falls, or Doyles River Falls.

While in Newport News, take time to visit the Colonial National Historic Park. Several sites around the area comprise this national park, including the Yorktown Battlefield, Historic Jamestown Settlement, Historic Williamsburg, the Cape Henry Memorial, and the Colonial Parkway. Get out and stretch your legs as you explore these historic sites. Go further either on bicycle or in your car on the two self-guided driving tours around Yorktown that total 16 miles.

While you’re visiting Shenandoah National Park, consider also stopping at Appomattox Court House National Historic Park. This park sits just outside the town of Appomattox, which is about 30 minutes west of Lynchburg and just over an hour south of Charlottesville. This is the site where the Army of Northern Virginia surrendered on April 9, 1865, bringing a close to the Civil War. You’ll have the opportunity to tour the courthouse and see numerous exhibits from the Civil War era. You’ll be able to stretch your legs on the eight miles of trails available in the park. Enjoy your meal at one of the picnic tables available next to the flagpole at the Visitor’s Center.

The Chippokes States Park is on the southern peninsula, about a 45-minute drive from Newport News. This has been a working farm since 1619, making it one of the oldest in the country. While here, you’ll enjoy the Olympic-size swimming pool, camping, and two miles of trails. You’ll also enjoy fishing from the shore of the James River or off the bridge over College Run Creek.

First Landing State Park is to the southeast on the southern peninsula and is a great place to visit if you’re headed to Virginia Beach or Chesapeake. This is the site where English colonists first landed in 1607, and it is now a nearly 2,900-acre state park. You’ll enjoy 10 biking and fitness trails totaling over 20 miles, along with over 1.5 miles of sandy beach facing the Chesapeake Bay for both fishing and swimming. There is one picnic shelter available to rent, which does include a single charcoal grill.

National Forests Near Newport News, VA

Virginia has many monuments and landmarks, given all the historical significance of the area. One monument you may want to check out is the Fort Monroe National Monument, in honor of the largest stone fort constructed in the United States. While here, you’ll enjoy exploring the Fort Monroe Casemate Museum, along with some spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean.

You won’t have to travel far to visit the Victory Arch, located right in Newport News as part of the Victory Landing Park. This is a monument constructed as a memorial to everyone who has served in the American military during a time of war.

RVShare has scoured the area for the best RV Parks near Newport News. The Colonies RV and Travel Park gets away from the overcrowded parks you see around the area with only 22 RV sites. You will enjoy being able to purchase and launch fireworks, and there are bicycle rentals and beach access. This is located at Fort Monroe, just east of Newport News, and is surrounded by a water moat.

Closer to the historical sites is the Williamsburg RV & Camping Resort located on Rochambeau Rd, just far enough removed to be a little less crowded with 149 RV sites. While here, you can enjoy the in-ground swimming pool and hot tub, a variety of recreational facilities, and laundry facilities. If you prefer to be near the beach, check out Sea Mist RV Campground, located on the shores of Virginia Beach. This facility is small with only 20 sites for Armed Service members and a bathhouse, a dump station, and free WiFi available.

Whether you're exploring the Virginia Zoo, Nauticus, or the Chrysler Museum of Art, our comprehensive list of RV dump stations near Norfolk includes both free and paid options with addresses, hours, costs, and more. When you're ready, search for RV rentals in the Norfolk area, book your spot at a top RV campground, and find the perfect storage facility for your RV.

When driving in urban areas, it's important to be aware of your surroundings and plan your route ahead of time to avoid narrow streets, low overpasses, or weight restrictions. In most cases, a standard driver's license is required to operate a Class A motorhome rental.

What kind of maintenance or upkeep do I need to perform on a Class A motorhome rental during my rental period?

How do I properly level and stabilize a Class A motorhome rental at my campsite or RV park, and what equipment or tools do I need for this?

What fuel efficiency considerations do I need to consider when operating a Class A motorhome rental, and how can I minimize the impact on my fuel costs?
