Yorktown Battlefield was the site of one of the most important battles in the Revolutionary War. In 1781, the British army surrendered to the American army and its allies on this legendary field, marking the last key fight of the war and the beginning of independence. Explore the allied forces' second siege line on the trail at the Yorktown National Cemetery. When the Americans were laying siege, they dug out a trench at this spot, getting them closer to the British forces — this short trail runs along the siege line, giving you the same view the soldiers would have seen. Look toward the river, and you'll be able to see the British redoubts 9 and 10; allied soldiers attacked and captured both forts from this trail.

SightseeingAfter American and allied armies laid siege on the British troops in Yorktown, the latter surrendered. The generals of the two forces eventually met at Moore House to work out the details of the British surrender. Working together, the generals wrote the Articles of Capitulation, which were then approved by General George Washington and General Lord Cornwallis, the leader of the British forces. The original Moore House was damaged significantly during the Civil War many years later; it was refurbished in 1881 and restored to its original form by the National Park Service in the early 1930s. Today, you can tour the house and see the room where the historic surrender happened.

Located a short walk northwest of the Visitor Center, Historic Yorktown offers the chance to see some of the oldest houses in the region. Don't miss the Nelson House, the Dudley Digges House, and the Customhouse. Some buildings, including the Nelson House, offer tours. You can drive through the neighborhood, but it's more pleasant to park at the visitor center and explore on foot. In the summer, catch a ride on one of the free trolleys that circle the village.

Get a sense of the scope of the siege on Yorktown by taking one of the self-guided battlefield tours. The Battlefield Tour follows a 7-mile route around the British inner defense lines, the two American siege lines, the Moore House, and Surrender Field, where the British troops laid down their guns. If you have more time, take the Allied Encampment Tour. It travels for 9 miles, taking you to the places where the American and French armies camped during the siege. The National Park Service offers a free audio tour to help you understand each site.
