Jonesboro is an Arkansas city in the northeastern part of the state. It's the fifth-biggest city in Arkansas, with a population of just over 80,000 residents. Around twice as many people live in the overall metropolitan area. Arkansas State University is here, and Jonesboro is the economic and cultural center for the northeastern region of Arkansas. The area has been inhabited for millennia, with indigenous peoples calling the area home long before European settlement. Historic tribes included the Quapaw, Caddo, and Osage. The name of the state was derived from the language of the Quapaw. The United States bought this area as part of the 1803 Louisiana Purchase. Settlers came in to start trapping, hunting, exploring, and trading, often with local indigenous tribes. The permanent Jonesboro settlement started in 1859. During your visit to Jonesboro, be sure to check out the Arkansas State Museum. Locals might call it the ASU Museum, but this teaching museum on the state university campus features excellent exhibits and art programming that help people engage in progressive thinking and learn about the area's cultural heritage and natural history. The American Battlefield Trust manages the Skirmish at Jonesboro, which is a historic site honoring a local battle during the Civil War. For contemporary art, check out the Bradbury Art Museum which has photography, creative installations, and more. The 501 Club offers a delectable menu full of upscale dining and hearty food, especially if you're craving a steak. For something more casual, check out the Bistro on the Ridge for home-cooked dishes that get to your table fast, including sandwiches. To get a taste of traditional Southern comfort food, head to Chef's In for buffet-style service and the chance for all-you-can-eat meals.

Perkins RV Park has a simple process for reservations, and the staff at this clean, quiet campground are always helpful. Larger RVs find life easy here, and you can bring your pets along. Dozens of RV sites feature cell reception, showers, and full hookups. Craighead Forest Park has a pretty lake, fishing, trails, and birdwatching for nature lovers. Burn off some energy by participating in sports, such as disc golfing, running, biking, and basketball. Activities in the park include basketball, bird-watching, biking, running, and disc golfing. Dozens of back-in sites offer full hookups. Lake Frierson State Park is on the top of Crowley's Ridge. Walk to Lake Frierson for 335 acres of fishing and water activities. Restaurants and shopping are relatively close, but they're far enough away to avoid noise in the camp itself. Back-in RV sites are available, and some have electrical and water hookups. Pets are permitted, and you'll get cell reception.

State Parks Near Jonesboro, Arkansas

Lake Charles State Park resulted from concerns that conservationists had about Black River erosion up in the Ozarks. The result was a dam and Lake Charles so that water runoff is controlled and the local area has a water supply. The park started in 1967 on the bluff over the lake. Here, 140 acres close to the shore offer fishing docks on the lake. Reelfoot Lake State Park is actually the result of earthquakes that happened in 1811. A series of earthquakes temporarily caused the Mississippi River to start flowing in reverse and flooded the Reelfoot tributary river. The surrounding forest was filled with water, and both ends of the river disappeared over many years, with the lake left behind. There are still trees growing in the water. Hike through this old-growth cypress collection of trees on an elevated boardwalk, or take a kayak to paddle through. Keep your eyes on the sky to catch the occasional bald eagle. Village Creek State Park offers nearly 7,000 acres of streams and forest. Hike the many trails, or go for a horseback ride. Golfers can enjoy 27 holes of championship golf, and horse riders can take advantage of the equestrian campground. If you can visit during the fall, the autumn foliage is an explosion of color. History buffs might enjoy the park trail that covers part of the Trail of Tears. Two lakes offer water activities, and there is a small museum and visitor center where you can learn more about this park when you first visit.

National Sites Near Jonesboro, Arkansas

Arkansas Post National Memorial is nestled in between two big waterways. Head to the eastern part of the state to find this historical treasure between Post Bend and Little Post Bayou, close to Pendleton and Gillett. Mild weather around the year means you can view natural beauty and abundant wildlife comfortably anytime you visit. The Arkansas Post dates back to 1686 when it started as a trading post between the French, Spanish, and Quapaw Indians. Visit here for a chance to see the American lotus, alligators, and bald eagles. Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site highlights a crucial moment in American history. In 1957, nine African-American students were the first ones to attend a recently desegrated school. They were blocked initially by the state's National Guard but later entered with the protection of local police and soldiers from an airborne infantry division. Take the opportunity to learn about how thousands mobbed these students and the Civil Rights struggle. The societal struggles that took place here reflected national debates that formed modern America. The Ozark National Scenic Riverways was created by Congress in 1964 to provide protection to the Jacks Fork and Current Rivers. This groundbreaking act led to more wild and scenic spaces across the country. Both of these rivers are fed by springs, and you can enjoy fishing and canoeing on both. The surrounding land has more than 100 historic sites and 300 caves. Viewing wildlife and watching birds are both popular activities here.

National Forests Near Jonesboro, Arkansas

Holly Springs National Forest was created in 1936 in a government attempt to avert possible disaster. The land was abandoned back then because rains washed away agricultural soils, but the stability of these rolling hills was put back in place by planting shortleaf and loblolly pine forests. Now, the 155,000 acres feature a number of functional private farmlands and small communities operating inside the boundaries of the forest. Streams running through this land feed pristine lakes full of fish. Hunters also flock to this area from not just Arkansas but also Tennessee and Mississippi. Mark Twain National Forest is one of America's most distinct national forests. Located in the southern part of Missouri, it features over three million acres. However, they're far from contiguous. There are actually nine different tracts of land. The only national forest in the state, it's managed as a single unit despite the fact that the public only owns half of it. The forest lies inside the Ozark Mountains. Ozark and St. Francis National Forests are in northwestern and central Arkansas. Visit Ozark Forest to access over 1 million acres of wilderness. The St. Francis National Forest is only 20,000 acres, but it also features some interesting things to do. It's the only national forest that has access to the Mississippi River, and it's just one of a handful of national forests where you can go caving. Between these two national forests, which are often managed as a single entity, you can enjoy scenic driving, hiking, fishing, and swimming.

Best National Parks Near Jonesboro, AR

Gateway Arch National Park used to be known as the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial. Regardless of the name, you'll recognize this place for the famous white arch standing over St. Louis, Missouri. Standing 630 feet above the Mississippi River, this place became a national park in just 2018 and marks the starting point for the Lewis and Clark expedition in the 19th century. Visit the top of the arch for a great view of the local area, but also take in the 91 acres of riverside land for historic buildings and modern museums. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park has more than 500,000 acres in the western area of North Carolina. Primary entry points include Cherokee in North Carolina or Townsend and Gatlinburg in Tennessee. Cherokee and Gatlinburg both feature plenty of touristy activities you can enjoy before entering the park itself and exploring one of the largest natural areas in this part of the country, including more than 2,100 miles of streams and rivers. Elevations range from 876 put to 6,643 feet. Ranger-guided events and programs happen frequently.

Hot Springs National Park is a unique national park that's in the middle of an actual city. Known as "The American Spa", people have long flocked here for the warmth of the thermal waters. The surrounding city was built here because of the hot springs. The park also features hiking you and a mountain tower for panoramic views. Learn about local gangsters from the 1920s, or find the courage to pet an alligator.
