The town of Hanover was originally founded by a Scots-Irishman named Richard McAllister, who purchased the land in 1745. He founded the town in 1763, and it was named Hanover after the city of Hannover, Germany. By the beginning of the Revolutionary War, Hanover featured approximately 500 homes, and the population would steadily increase until the War of 1812. From that point, the town would experience only minor growth until several railroads were completed in the area during the 1850s. Hanover was officially incorporated on March 4, 1815. The town was the site of the Battle of Hanover during the Civil War on June 30, 1863.
Today, Hanover is home to roughly 17,000 people and is known as the "Snack Food Capital of the United States." The town has earned this nickname because of places like Utz Quality Foods and Snyder's of Hanover, both of which have been staples in the community since the early 1900s. Hanover is also home to several unique landmarks that are worth visiting, such as the St. Vincent de Paul Church, the Utz Potato Chip Factory, and the Warehime Myers Mansion. There's also the Hanover Fire Museum, which preserves and showcases over 200 years of firefighting history.
If you enjoy the performing arts, there's the Hanover Little Theatre, which dates back to 1949, and the Eichelberger Performing Arts Center, which was built back in 1896. One of the most popular natural areas is Codorus State Park, which is a great destination for activities like fishing, boating, and hiking.
You'll have no shortage of quality restaurants to choose from while you're in the area. You could grab some authentic Italian cuisine at La Cucina Cafe, try the seafood at Bay City Restaurant & Seafood Company, or grab an iconic pretzel at Revonah Pretzels.
