Present-day Covina was home to the Tongva people for thousands of years before the arrival of colonists. In the 18th century, it was part of Rancho La Puente, a Mexican land grant. Joseph Swift Phillips founded modern Covina in 1882 on a 2,000-acre land parcel acquired from a grantee of Rancho La Puente called John Edward Hollenbeck. The city was named by Frederick Eaton, a young engineer employed to survey the region. He loved how the San Gabriel Mountains formed a cove around vineyards in the area. He combined the words “cove” and “vine” to create Covina.
Covina Township was officially created in 1885. It was incorporated into a city in 1905. Besides vineyards, oranges and grapefruits were common farm produce in the new town. In fact, Covina was the third-largest producer of oranges globally by 1909. It was recognized as the producer of the best oranges even in the 1950s. Revenue from the sale of oranges and other farm produce helped develop Covina as its population increased.
