The city of Cape Girardeau is named after Jean Baptiste de Girardot, a French soldier who set up a trading post in the area in 1733. In 1793, French-Canadian Louis Lorimier was commissioned by Spain to establish a military post in the area. Cape Girardeau was officially incorporated as a town in 1808. In 1843 it was reincorporated as a city. The city experienced remarkable growth throughout the 1800s. Railroads were constructed, public education was established, and the agricultural industry continued to progress. Today, this city that was once a tiny trading post along the Mississippi River has grown to nearly 40,000 residents.
