Great Smoky Mountains National Park  

Great Smoky Mountains National Park is just 10 minutes off Interstate 40 as it goes through Bluffton, Tennessee, so stopping at this gorgeous national park is a no-brainer. This park contains more than 500,000 acres of the Blue Ridge Mountains, making for plenty of awesome places to go hiking, biking, riding, and more. Fishing and boating are also popular here, as are auto touring and camping. You can even hike on a bit of the Appalachian Trail at this national park. 

New River Gorge National Park  

Before you head into Knoxville, you should get on Interstate 81 in Bluffton, Tennessee, and travel about three hours and 40 minutes to New River Gorge National Park. This may be America’s newest national park, but the New River and its gorge have been premier rafting and climbing destinations for adventurers for many years. There are also some excellent hiking trails here, so you’ll have plenty of ways to tour this fascinating 70,000-acre stretch of the Appalachian Mountains.

Shenandoah National Park  

Shenandoah National Park is nearly four and a half hours from Bluffton, but it’s just two hours and 15 minutes from New River Gorge. This lovely part of the Blue Ridge Mountains is home to Skyline Drive, which winds its way through 100 miles of lovely mountain scenery you can view from your vehicle. More than a hundred miles of the Appalachian Trail are also here, as are many other fabulous trails. Rock climbing, fishing, and mountain climbing are popular activities here. 

Mammoth Cave National Park  

Two hours west of London, Kentucky, is Mammoth Cave National Park. Visitors come here to explore part of the world’s longest-known cave system, so you’ll be in good company as you walk through areas like Frozen Niagara and the Rotunda. There are plenty of fun things to do on the surface as well; you can go hiking, biking, and riding on some nice trails. Multiple area rivers provide some great locations for fishing and boating as well. 

Indiana Sand Dunes National Park  

Just because you’ve reached the technical end of your Greenville to Versailles RV road trip doesn’t mean that you can’t drive four hours and 45 minutes north of your final destination to Indiana Sand Dunes National Park. At this national park, 15 miles of gorgeous Lake Michigan shoreline await you; you’ll have no problem finding awesome places for fishing, boating, water sports, and more. Hiking, riding, and biking are popular as well thanks to the 50 miles of trails that take you through 20 square miles of surrounding Indiana countryside.

Table Rock State Park  

You can find Table Rock State Park by traveling 20 minutes west of Travelers Rest, South Carolina. This state park is home to the state’s tallest peak, so hikers enjoy exploring the numerous trails here; access to the 80-mile Foothills Trail is also in the park. Lake Oolenoy and Pinnacle Lake are great places to swim and boat, and multiple historic buildings are ripe for exploration. If you visit at the right time, you might get to hear some awesome Music on the Mountain.

South Mountains State Park  

An hour and 15 minutes east of Asheville, North Carolina, is South Mountains State Park. Horseback riders love coming here to ride on the 33 miles of bridle trails; mountain bikers enjoy traversing the 17-mile loop trail, and hikers can take advantage of 40 miles of trails. The trout fishing here is fabulous thanks to the mountain streams at this lovely North Carolina state park. 

Panther Creek State Park  

Panther Creek State Park is 15 minutes from Dandridge, Tennessee. Cherokee Reservoir is an excellent location for boating and fishing; there’s also a nice pool for swimming. There are 30 miles of trails in the park, so hikers, riders, and bikers have plenty of places to get out in nature. Other popular pastimes here include golfing, birdwatching, and camping. 

Indian Mountain State Park  

Just before you cross into Kentucky, you should take a short detour five minutes west of Jellico, Tennessee, to explore Indian Mountain State Park. Indian Mountain Lake is a fun place to go kayaking, canoeing, and fishing. Several easy-to-moderate trails take you through the beautiful land at the base of Indian Mountain. 

Cumberland Falls State Park  

If you want to see a moonbow on your road trip from Greenville to Versailles, then you’ll definitely want to pay a visit to Cumberland Falls State Park, which is 20 minutes from Williamsburg, Kentucky. Cumberland Falls itself is pretty all the time, but it’s particularly stunning in the moonlight; you can hop aboard a tour boat to see the falls at night. There are plenty of places to hike thanks to the park’s 17 miles of trails. One path even connects to the trail network in the Daniel Boone National Forest. Other fun activities here include gem mining, birding, and fishing.

One awesome place to go is Soaky Mountain Waterpark, which is just 10 minutes from Sevierville, Tennessee. Exciting rides like Avalanche Watercoaster, Splash & Furious, Cottonmouth Coils, and Blue Mountain Mayhem await.

Zoo Knoxville  

Five minutes from Interstate 40 as it goes through Knoxville, Tennessee, is Zoo Knoxville. In addition to viewing animals from all over the world, you can check out attractions like the Zoo Choo Train, the Fuzzy-Go-Round Carousel, and the Clayton Safari Splash. If you get hungry, you can grab some grub at places like Aldo’s Grill and Beastro Cafe.

Lexington Brewing & Distilling Co. is 15 minutes from your route as it goes through Lexington, Kentucky.
