Explore Crystal River, Florida in an RVshare RV Rental

The inhabited history of the Crystal River, Florida area dates back thousands of years. Dating back 2,500 years, the first settlers, which we call the Deptford culture, built structures. While it's unknown why this culture disappeared, much of the available archeological evidence of their existence can be found in the Crystal River Archeological State Park.

Over the years, the Seminole Native American tribe settled into the area, followed by European settlers in the mid-1850s. After this, a post office and a mercantile shop were established, which brought even more settlers into the area.

After the Civil War, the growing continental railroad started to bring new families from northern states, and unique Florida-only exports began to be shipped northward. These included citrus fruit and unique lumber found in the state, but in addition, meats, sugar, and cotton were also sent by rail to locations throughout the country. During the turn of the century, this part of the state became a major producer in the turpentine industry, which was shipped by rail and sent around the world by sea.

In 1903, Crystal River was officially named a town. It was incorporated as a city 20 years later, in 1923. Today, the weather is typically warm, and you are likely to see a manatee or two in the local waters. The city also has a burgeoning history scene, with locations like the Floral City Heritage Museum and The Coastal Heritage Museum drawing in many yearly visitors.
