Before Mission Viejo became a planned community, it was part of Rancho Mission Viejo, which eventually covered more than 200,000 acres. James Flood and Richard O'Neill Sr. founded the ranch in 1885. The land remained in the O'Neill family until they helped establish Mission Viejo in 1963. The family hired workers to construct homes that they sold to the public for $21,000. The family still operates the nearby ranch.
