After Tom Green County and Midland County split off in 1885, the newly formed municipality served as a shipping hub for the area's farms and ranches. Shops, banks, churches, and schools were established in "Windmill City."At the end of the 20th century, Midland started to transition from a wood-frame city to one built of brick and mortar, even starting a minor college in 1910. Droughts, World War I, and the 1918 pandemic were some of the difficulties that local residents faced in the early decades.

West Texas was profoundly changed when massive petroleum reserves were discovered. Leaders in Midland promoted the city as the Permian Basin's commercial and financial hub. After surviving the difficult years of the Great Depression, Midland reemerged and helped the United States win World War II by providing enormous quantities of oil and training hundreds of bombardiers at the Midland Army Air Field. Midland helped power the affluent postwar years as Americans generated a nearly insatiable demand for petroleum products.

As the city developed, new office buildings were constructed, and a number of oil-related businesses chose Midland as their corporate headquarters. Midland, which could be seen for miles over the plains, earned the nickname "Tall City."At the end of the 20th century, Midland was prominent on a state, national, and even worldwide level. Today, Midland is a dynamic city that is home to significant global organizations, growing family businesses, and businesspeople looking for expansion prospects. Its inhabitants benefit from an ever-expanding economy and have the second-highest personal income in the country.

A must-see destination is the Petroleum Museum, which features both indoor and outdoor exhibitions. The museum educates visitors about the Permian Basin's petroleum history and the contributions that science, technology, and the arts have made to this vital energy industry. Consider attending a show or concert at the Wagner Noel Performing Arts Center for a fun evening of entertainment. It was created to promote artistic endeavors at all levels, from undergraduate to international performances. It is also intended to draw people of all economic levels to participate in the arts in the neighborhood. National performers, Broadway plays, comedies, rock concerts, and symphonic performances frequent the venue.

A fantastic option right in the city is Midland RV Park. The park features full hookups, showers, and other amenities, and several attractions are nearby. Across the street are the Jenna Welch Nature Study Center and the I-20 Wildlife Preserve.

You can escape the hustle and bustle of city life at Lucky Star RV Park, situated away from the highway outside the city boundaries. An RV repair facility that works on RVs and tow vehicles is also located at Lucky Star RV Park.

Another option is to camp at Mesquite Oasis RV Park, just outside Odessa 23 miles from Midland. Security cameras have been installed throughout Mesquite Oasis RV Park to ensure campers are in a secure environment. In addition to full-hookup sites, you'll have access to showers and a gymnasium with basketball, volleyball, and indoor tennis courts.

State Parks Near Midland, Texas

Visit Monahans Sandhill State Park to see one of the most fascinating ecosystems on earth. Monahans Sandhills State Park provides a Texas-sized sandbox and a close-up view of a unique desert environment. You can freely explore the park at your leisure because there are no designated trails. Keep an eye out for the numerous animals, plants, and wildflowers that survive in the area.

Lake Colorado City State Park is a beautiful tranquil area situated about 11 miles southwest of Colorado City and 77 miles south of Abilene and Midland, Texas. The peaceful park features cactus, juniper, and mesquite plants and gently sloping hills. Its main draw is the Lake Colorado City reservoir, a Morgan Creek impoundment stocked with fish. Despite the peaceful and quiet environment, there is still much to do, from hiking trails like the Cactus Cut Trail and the Roadrunner Loop Trail to swimming, boating, and fishing on Lake Colorado.

Balmorhea State Park is a real desert paradise with glistening streams and breathtaking mountain views. The natural, spring-fed swimming pool is the focal point of the park. This fascinating pool, which is 1.3 acres in size and 25 feet deep, is created by the San Solomon Springs water. The secluded campground off Interstate 10 is ideal for a one-night stop on a road trip through Texas or a lengthy peaceful vacation. It is situated just four miles from small Balmorhea and 188 miles from El Paso.

National Sites Near Midland, Texas

mistad National Recreation Area, which is situated in Del Rio, Texas, is a picturesque tourist attraction that provides a variety of recreational options. At the confluence of the Pecos River, the Rio Grande, and the Devils River, it has a reservoir centered on the Amistad Dam. The national recreation area's surroundings have a varied wildlife population, ancient rocks, and lush scenery. While in the area, visit the Whitehead Memorial Museum or the Laughlin Heritage Foundation Museum.

Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park is a unique location rich in information about the life of the 36th president, from his early years spent with his family to his ultimate burial place on his LBJ Ranch. The historical site has a modern display center which serves as the centerpiece of the history of the cattle industry and early Johnson family settlement. Follow the Wolf Mountain Trail for fantastic views of the valley, springs, scrubland, and deep cedar forests. You'll have an opportunity to see animals and a gorgeous mountaintop and overlook Texas' beautiful terrain.

One of the historically significant locations near Midland is Alibates Flint Quarries. The monument, which is just 1.7 square miles, has the remains of many flint quarries that the local indigenous people utilized for up to 12,000 years. The depressions have now diminished to tiny sinkholes on the east side of the lake. You can spend time exploring the quarries or the surroundings, which are desolate but rather picturesque with low plateaus featuring mesquite trees and scattered stones divided by scrub-covered gorges.

National Forests Near Midland, Texas

Davy Crockett National Forest includes portions of Houston and Trinity counties and sits close to the cities of Crockett and Lufkin. In addition to streams and wildlife habitats, the forest has more than 160,000 acres of woods. The Ratcliff Lake Recreation Area, which contains a 4-acre lake, is also within the forest. Swimming, camping, boating, and fishing are available to Ratcliff Lake visitors.

Sabine National Forest extends across 160,656 acres near Hemphill, Texas. The fifth-largest man-made water body in the U.S. and a great area for fishing, Toledo Bend, is bordered by this forest. Several fantastic multi-use routes are wonderful for equestrian riding, hiking, and biking. You may find peaceful locations in this woodland despite the numerous projects near Toledo Bend Reservoir.

Lincoln National Forest is a hidden green haven in the middle of an unending desert close to White Sands National Park and the Mexican border in southern New Mexico. You may hike here in the windy, wooded highlands or travel far into the untamed, stony valleys. You can ride a mountain bike or an OHV down mountain trails for an exhilarating experience. Join locals for a day of skiing at the Ski Apache resort in the winter.

Best National Parks Near Midland, TX

Carlsbad Caverns National Park is an incredible location. It is a magnificent subterranean limestone cave in the Guadalupe Mountains of southeast New Mexico that was first found by a curious youngster in 1898. Over 119 limestone caverns may be found in the national park, which is encircled by the stunning Chihuahuan Desert. Whites City, located just outside the park's entrance, is the nearest local town. Carlsbad has fewer hiking opportunities since the park is made up of a desert landscape. There are no overnight RV camping options in Carlsbad Caverns National Park, so visitors opt to utilize the park's primitive campgrounds, which are only accessible in the backcountry with a permit.

You can also choose to visit Guadalupe Mountains National Park, one of the newer parks in Texas. Guadalupe Peak, which rises to an elevation of 8,749 feet, is located here. Along with the restored Frijole Ranch, which houses a museum of ranching history, the park also features the remains of a historic stagecoach station. Although there aren't many towns around the Guadalupe Mountains, there are still a few interesting locations to explore. Since the park is close to the border between Texas and New Mexico, you may take side trips to learn more about everything from green chiles to UFO activity. The park has several hiking trails. You can stroll by a refreshing stream or locate an overlook with a breathtaking view of the desert. Additionally, there are paths for every skill level, ranging from even paved trails to rough ascents of mountain summits. Within the park, two campsites allow RV camping, although neither offers hookups or dump stations.

Big Bend National Park, located four and a half hours southeast of El Paso, is a thrilling West Texas destination for kayakers, hikers, and mountain bikers. The gorgeous Rio Grande River is the most prominent feature of the landscape, but there are also mountains, canyons, deserts, and a number of thermal hot springs. The park also has Emory Peak, which rises 7,832 feet above sea level in the Chisos Mountains. The National Park Service provides a wide selection of programs for tourists inside the park, such as ranger-led hikes.
