The city of Lawton was founded in 1901, and it was initially established as a stop on the Arkansas-Pacific Railroad line. The city was named after Major General Henry W. Lawton, who served in the Union Army during the Civil War and was killed in action in 1898. Lawton was a small frontier town with just over 1,000 people in its early years.
