While most of Oklahoma is quite flat, the Quartz Mountain State Park area is very different. This state park is home to mountains that tower approximately 1,000 feet over the surrounding landscape, and they are home to numerous hiking trails and climbing routes. The park also features a large manmade lake, which is great for swimming, boating and fishing.

Quartz Mountain is a great destination for observing local wildlife. You'll be able to see elk, deer, foxes, raccoons and even bison. Wild cattle can also be found throughout the region.
Stargazing
Due to the low population density of the region, you'll be able to enjoy exceptional conditions for stargazing. The climate is relatively dry, which means that there are plenty of clear nights.

While the park is sparsely covered with trees, you'll be able to find a wide range of grasses and sagebrush throughout the park. Also, Quartz Mountain is home to a wide range of wildlife species, including foxes, raccoons, deer, elk, bison and wild cattle.
Hiking
Hiking in the park tends to be fairly challenging, and most routes include rock scrambles. However, reaching the summits of mountains in the area is quite rewarding as the combination of high elevation and flat surrounding terrain leads to incredible, vast views.
Boating
You'll be able to enjoy kayaking and canoeing in Lake Altus-Lugert, and motorboats are also allowed.
Swimming
Lake Altus-Lugert is an excellent destination for swimming. You'll be able to cool off in the swimming areas of the lake, which are located near sandy beaches.
Climbing
Baldy Point is an excellent destination for rock climbing. In addition, it's possible to enjoy rock climbing in other areas of the park as well.
How to Get to
Quartz Mountain State Park
If you're coming from Oklahoma City, take I-40 until you reach Oklahoma Route 6. Then, turn left onto East 1370 Road and North 2040 Road. This will take you to the park. If you get to East 1380 Road, you've missed the entrance to the park. The trip will take you approximately two hours and 15 minutes. If you're coming from Dallas, take US Route 287 until you reach US Route 283. Stay on US Route 283 until you reach Route 44. Bear right onto this road. Then, take a left onto Route 44A, which will lead you to the park. If you're coming from Albuquerque, the trip will take you approximately six hours and 30 minutes. Take I-40 until you reach US Route 283 in Oklahoma. Head south on this road until you reach Oklahoma Route 9. Make a left onto this road, and follow it until you reach Oklahoma Route 6. Make a right onto this road. Follow it until you reach East County Road 1465. Make a left on to it, and stay on it until it becomes East County Road 1470. Bear right on to Route 44A, which will lead you to the park.
Entering Quartz Mountain State Park
The park has a parking lot, which has plenty of space for RVs of all sizes. In addition, there are handicap-accessible parking spaces in the lot, and the park's bathhouses and picnic area are considered ADA-accessible. The lake area offers a ramp. The park is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. every day.

Summers tend to be quite hot, which means that the best times to go hiking or rock climbing are during the spring and fall. However, summer is ideal for swimming as water temperatures are at their warmest.
