Lake Alfred is a tiny, unincorporated town that lies at the crossroads of two major highways: U.S. Highways 17-92 and 301. The Chain of Lakes Trail offers 30 miles worth of paved, multi-use trails for cyclists, joggers and pedestrians. It is a route that winds through several of Lake Alfred’s lakes.
The area was first settled by Thomas McCloud in 1870 when he built a sawmill on Lake Rochelle. The mill's power came from a waterfall that emptied into the lake. McCloud named his town "Lakemont". A post office opened in Lakemont in 1887. The name was changed to Lake Alfred in 1899 because there was already another Lakemont post office in Florida. A railroad line came through the town in 1907 and helped it grow as a citrus growing centre. In 1911 it became the county seat of the newly created Polk County.
Lake Alfred is home to Lake Rochelle, a 55-acre lake that is a popular recreation destination for boating, fishing and swimming. The lake has two public access areas – one at the north end of the lake and one at the south end – and each has a boat ramp. There are also hiking trails in the area.
