A post office opened in Lakemont in 1887. The name was changed to Lake Alfred in 1899 because there was already another Lakemont post office in Florida. A railroad line came through the town in 1907 and helped it grow as a citrus growing centre. In 1911 it became the county seat of the newly created Polk County. The lake has two public access areas – one at the north end of the lake and one at the south end – and each has a boat ramp. There are also hiking trails in the area.
