There’s no shortage of awesome beachfront cities in Florida. The problem is that many of them are already huge tourist traps. They’re crowded, they’re overpriced, and they lack a certain authenticity. If you’re looking for a place to vacation in Florida that’s not as jam packed during the high season but is still beautiful, check out Melbourne. A great destination for golf, cultural activities, and all sorts of outdoor fun, Melbourne is all palm trees, beaches, and sunglasses without the throngs of confused tourists. If you’re interested in NASA and the US space program, Melbourne is close to Cape Canaveral, and you’ll find lots of places in the region with the moniker “space coast” in their names. Pull up and check out these spots in an RV rental Melbourne FL!
Popular Tourist Attractions
Brevard Zoo and Treetop Trek Aerial Adventures
This is a real two-for-one attraction: a world class zoo featuring animals from around the world plus a ropes obstacle and zip line course. At the zoo, visitors can see everything from giraffes and kangaroos to alligators and crocodiles. Of, if you’re more of an adrenaline junkie, head to the zoo’s Treetop Trek for some swinging through the trees. Some parts of the course are even over live alligators and other wildlife! Admission costs depend on age and what you’re interested in doing, but a basic zoo ticket for an adult is $14.95.
Foosaner Art Museum
Take a break from the heat or take shelter from a Florida rainstorm and spend some time with this truly impressive collection of modern and contemporary art. Run by the Florida Institute of Technology, the Foosaner Art Museum has both permanent and rotating exhibits, regularly scheduled events, and single day workshops in which locals and out-of-towners alike can participate. (Check their website for dates and availability.) The museum is open every day except Monday. Admission is $5 for adults and $2 for seniors, children and students, though it’s free for everyone on Thursdays.
Andretti Thrill Park
Florida certainly has its share of amusement parks, but they’re all so big. If you’re looking for something a little more manageable (and, frankly, affordable), check out Andretti Thrill Park. They’ve got enough thrill rides for the most discerning coaster enthusiast, plus batting cages, go kart tracks, mini golf, an arcade, and lots more. It’s a great time for the whole family without being an exhausting, budget-busting time.
Campgrounds and State/National Parks
Manatee Hammock Park Campground
Just north of Melbourne is Manatee Hammock Park and its really impressive RV campground. Full and partial hookups are available, and it’s located right on the Indian River. Guests have access to restrooms with hot showers as well as laundry facilities. Wake up to great fishing, wildlife watching, and an awesome swimming pool. This is a fantastic campground for RV rentals Melbourne Beach Florida!
Wickham Park Campground
This one’s right in Melbourne, and all of its RV spots offer full hookups; tent spots are available for those who like to rough it. The park itself offers lots of opportunities for outdoor fun, including hiking trails, two swimming lakes, an archery range, a disc golf course, a playground for the kids, and much more.
Sebastian Inlet State Park Campground
Located in Melbourne Beach is this park that’s perhaps best known as an awesome spot to catch a wave and go surfing. The full service campground is also pretty great: there are more than 50 spots with water and electric hookups, and guests have access to restrooms. Speaking of access, the entire site is ADA compliant and even has beach wheelchairs available for guests at no charge. The beach is just a short walk away.
Melbourne Arts Festival
For two days at the end of April, art takes over the city for the Melbourne Arts Festival. Featuring work by hundreds of artists working in just about every medium you can think of, plus art workshops, live music, a kids area, and more, this free event is a great way to spend the entire weekend. Run the 5k in the morning, then enjoy all the tasty and unhealthy festival food at lunch.
Melbourne Main Street Friday Fest
On the second Friday of every month from 6:00pm to 10:00pm, downtown Melbourne is transformed into a big outdoor party! There’s live music, kids activities, and all sorts of things going on. Bring your appetite and grab dinner from one of the outdoor food vendors, then check out what the local merchants have for sale. There’s something different every month, and everyone’s invited to this fun and free event.
Melbourne and Florida’s space coast have a lot going on, and it’s a lot less crowded (and more affordable) than South Beach in Miami. You still get all the beauty of Florida and loads of fun and family friendly things to do, and it’s incredibly RV friendly to boot.
