Kearney is a quaint city located in Clay County, Missouri. The community was unofficially founded in 1856 by two men named David T. Duncan and W. R. Cave, who originally called the new settlement Centerville. The area that made up Centerville would eventually become the southeastern portion of modern-day Kearney. In 1867, plans for a new settlement in the area were created by John Lawrence. This new town was named after Charles E. Kearney, the president of the Kansas City and Cameron Railroad.
