In 1841, the land that would eventually become Hayward became part of the Spanish land grant, Rancho San Lorenzo. Later, a man named William Dutton Hayward arrived in the area and purchased a section of the land. He would build a grand hotel in the area in 1852, which eventually burned to the ground in 1916.
